Any rotrex mx5s lurking in here?

Postby mx5002 » Fri Sep 04, 2015 11:40 am

I'm contemplating upgrading my car (an nb8b) with a rotrex c30-90 next year some time. Track dog racing in the states have almost released their kit and I know there are a few other kits available.

Just looking for some first hand opinions /reviews

Cheers

I'd be very keen to see what you can find out Dennis.

At some stage in the distant future (when I win the lottery!) I'd like to do something with my SE and the Rotrex may be an alternative to the traditional Garrett etc. I'm just not convinced yet that it would suit my application which is all track-based.

Good luck with your investigations!

I'd talk to Bullet Cars... given they are in Australia so I think the pricing on a Rotrex kit will be a lot less than in the states given the plummeting aussie dollar. Its the Kraftworks kit they sell anyway which is a NA/NB DIY kit for $3790. (that would be a C30-74 but the C30-94 would be the same price)

At some point I'd like to put one on my car... I'd be going all out for over 400 HP.

I think a big rotrex on a track car reving between 6000-8000 would be very quick. Nice linear power band with big power.

Thanks madjak.

That diy kit looks like a good start. Might give them a call and find out a bit more. I have no immediate plans but I can start putting the bits aside.

I reckon it would be a good all-rounder set up with the linear power band that would help look after engine internals aswell. Plus it runs is own oil cooling system rather than a traditional turbo setup

Couple of Rotrex cars around here, at least. Owners are very happy, one has been running it for 5 plus years, maybe pushing ten years, speaks for itself (NB8A).

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

Good to know thanks Ed! Hopefully one comes forward. Would love to see, hopefully feel the power one in the flesh.

I also have been running a Rotrex in my 1.6 for the last 18 months. It's the basic Kraftwerks kit with an intercooler and running stock computer. Have been fiddling with injectors to get it to run better on the stock ecu. Now happy with SE turbo injectors - car runs smoothly and for a street setup it's just what I wanted pulling 109kw safely. Still to do a fuel consumption test. If I deleted the AFM it would make more power but would not look as stock under the bonnet. reliable, quiet and a stock feel - just quicker!

Thanks that's good to know.

Do you guys use yours cars for much track work? I spoke to a very knowledgeable tuner last week about it. He tells me they heatsoak on the track and lose performance. More so than a turbo. I wouldn't think this would be the case though. (assuming both systems are intercooled)

Haven't heard it being a problem as it runs its own lubrication system. I've only done driver training course and with intercooler and coolant re route never goes above normal temp.
Another big plus which I didnt mention before is simple bolt on install.

Yeah I found it a little hard to believe. as you were saying it runs is own oil cooling system and its not bolted to a turbo exhaust housing which is running at a thousand degrees.

Positive displacement superchargers suffer heat soak more than a centrifugal supercharger could.

I watched a bloke race his positive displacement supercharged mx on short circuit of SMP. He had noticeable heat soak by the 3rd lap.

Keen to see centrifugal in the flesh :)

Hi Trader,
Why no ecu upgrade, maybe due to canberra road rules?

Wouldn't your car be smoother and more powerful with an aftermarket ecu?

How does she sound. I mean can we please get some vids happening in this thread. :D
