Can you adjust the frame of an NA soft top?

Postby bruce » Thu Sep 03, 2015 2:16 pm

Howdy,
My soft top frame catches the seat belt towers when I put it up. My towers look stock with only the plastic trim removed. I have to wiggle the frame to make it clear the towers (it just catches on the metal hinges of the roof frame).
Also, the frame rattles when up over bouncy roads (near the passengers head). I can't see anything loose or worn. The roof and frame appear to be in top condition as a hardtop was used for many years.
Is there any adjustability in the frame?
Ta

Any ideas on this?
I'm thinking it may be a case of just wiggling and pulling the frame !

Bruce, can only suggest the following, if you've not already had a look there: http://www.miata.net/garage/garagetops.html

This is a new one, can't recall reading of this happening before.

Is it happening on both sides (sounded like it from your explanation)? Maybe the top frame has been bent up somewhere to give more height or something (would pull the sides in)?

I know when I first got my SE last year the soft top had hardly ever been used by the two previous owners, just been left sitting under the hardtop. It was all very stiff and tight and almost impossible to latch, but it didn't catch on the frame anywhere.

I reckon have a read of what 93_Clubman has linked and maybe unbolt it and re-fit ...

if you bring your car over to my place i'd be happy to have a look and help.
Sounds odd, but fixable.

That'd be nice Beavis. It would be good to compare roofs to see where mine's been tweaked (it has come out for the half cage install).

Thanks to Beavis for having a look. Turns out my seat belt towers have been modified.
