1st trackday at Wakefield

Postby maximus94 » Tue Aug 25, 2015 8:50 pm

Hey everyone. I've had my mx5 na6 for a few months now and I am really keen to go for a trackday in it. Wakefield is looking like the best place to go for me but as it will be my first trackday ever I wanted to get some info/advice.

My car is all standard except for 15x8 buddyclub p1's with near new 195/50 pirelli tyres on them. The car has been checked over so mechanically its all fine.

Is this setup ok? is it worth it? and what are the chances of something going wrong with the car? (no i wont be crashing aha)

Also i am assuming that i will be shown round the track and its not just rock up and have a go.

Thanks :)

This should answer most of your questions:

Your setup should be fine.

Damn Bryan, just beat me!

195/50's on 15x8 rims sounds like they are a bit stretched, and that may not be ideal for the track. However that isn't a show-stopper.

If you check the mechanical basics of your car (brakes, suspension, engine oil, cooling), then a major failure at the track is unlikely, not impossible, but unlikely. MX-5 s tend to be relatively easy on mechanicals, up to the point when they become highly tuned race cars........or turbos :-)

Wakefield Park is a great venue for a first outing, as it is very safe, with great vision and plenty of run-off for the inevitable mistakes.

The page that Guran linked explains the process for first-timers at MX-5 Club of NSW track days.

However, the MX-5 Club also offers driver training days at the Marulan Driver Training Centre, with much greater availability of experienced drivers to offer in-car advice. You might want to consider starting with one of these driver training days first. The next one is in October.

I’d suggest one of the Trackschool days for your first day out as you’ll get a ton of track time (normally they’ll get under 30 people which is tiny) and they always have a couple of professional instructors there who can come into your car for the first session and throughout the day.

They are a bit more expensive than many track days but since you get double the track time of most and the instruction is great I think the extra $100 over other days is worth it.

They advertise the day on the website for $295 but they also advertise them on this forum (viewforum.php?f=63) for $250 so make sure you use the 'forum discount'.

Once you get the bug definitely come to one of the NSW MX5 Club days at some point, they are great day out.

Thanks guy for your advice. So it looks like i'll go for a track school day first to learn all the basics and stuff so i don't embarrass myself later haha.
