Geelong to Sunshine Coast

Postby pcmx5 » Fri Jul 24, 2015 10:18 am

I am sick of having a cold and the miserable weather we are having and am thinking about spending a few days with friends on the Sunshine Coast.I will take my Renault Megane GT-Line for comfort, economy and cruise control if i decide to stick to the main routes, probably Hume to Sydney and then up the coast and Newell home.

However the MX may get the job if I can find a route that doesn't have hundreds of kms of straight cruising.

Any suggestions? Wouldn't mind using the coast route if there are some nice little diversions available to break it up.

I have done the back roads through Gippsland and then the Alpine then to Albury before but may have snow issues as I am going in about 2 weeks time. Happy to spend up to 4 days travel time each way if it gives an engaging drive.

Cheers,

Peter.

Roads I like (that would keep you vaguely on a North - South orientation! ) include:

Armidale Road from Dorrigo to Grafton (Orara Way will be faster but less interesting)
Bylong Way from Bathurst to Muswellbrook/Singleton is great if you do happen to be inland
Thunderbolts Way would swap you from the coast to the New England
Nerang-Murwillumbah Road is nice
Wootton Way

Except for the Alpine Way I haven't explored other options between Sydney and Melbourne yet.

On the Vic side, Bonang Hwy would be a fun detour from the Prices Hwy but you'd be risking black ice.
This time of year I'd stick to the coast and head inland once you've passed the alps.

It pretty much seems a route from Sydney as the Hume is essentially just for function- I guess you can do Vic anytime. Never done Slubs route but it looks interesting. I heard Thunderbolts Way is pretty terrific.

I've done the long way from Melbourne to Canberra a couple of times. Head east through the Gippsland, turn north at Cann River and run up through Cooma. The roads through there wouldn't make anyone's list of 'greatest driving roads' but they're pretty good and undeniably way more interesting than the Hume. Plus you'll avoid the snow.

Cooma to Goulburn is then pretty boring (and filled with police trying to catch snow people from Sydney) but Goulburn to Oberon is spectacular, and would then leave you in good stead to join slug-dub's suggestion of Bathurst to Muswellbrook.

Slight detour if you're keen is to continue east through Cann River and head up towards Bega. You could then turn west over Brown Mountain, towards Nimmitabel and back to Cooma, or even run the length up the coast and find all those interesting roads around Kangaroo Valley, with the view to join back up with the Hume around Mittagong.

Last minute suggestions on a few somewhat sideways northern NSW routes worth considering. Any would be good if you have time:

Tenterfield - Casino http://binged.it/1OrEUlt
Glen Innes - Grafton http://binged.it/1OrF2kQ
Port Macquarie - Uralla http://binged.it/1OrF8sO

Link to Slug_Dubs suggestion from Armidale to Grafton via the Nymboida corkscrew http://binged.it/1OrFm35 and Grafton - Casino - Gold Coast area http://binged.it/1OrFzmX

I like this thread! I'll plot some of these routes for my second attempt to get to Miles in QLD (whenever that will be...).

Does Miles still exist? I thought that was renamed to 'KILOMETRES'

Let us know when you get up this way and maybe an inpromtu cruise thru the Glasshouse Mountains with some Australia's BEST roads! You can drive from Brisbane's northern burbs to the Sunny Coast and have the most magnificent scenery and ocean views all the way and heaps of little coffee stops and photo stops if you want that as well

If no other road is used - BELLTHORPE RANGE [UP] is an absolute must do!!

I remember saving this one from a previous topic on the subject....

Also, well, make sure you do the Oxley Highway, and then there's the Oxley Highway, but not if it will interfere with the chance to do the Oxley Highway!
