Just going back to the original post for a moment...

If you need to justify it on a $/km basis, it's probably time to lose it.

I have a few cars, the only one I worry about costs for is the work ute, and only then to make sure I track all costs for the tax man. Other than that, my toys cost what they cost.

If I needed to justify my cars I would be in a world of hurt and pain with:
NA6, has done less than 3200km in almost 18 months, spend what it needs in maintenance.
S14 race car, is still being built as I have the dollars, hasn't moved in 12 months and have just pulled the trigger on getting the bottom end of the motor built.
VH Charger, 15 year checque book restoration, don't want to know how much I have spent over the years but would be in excess of $60k, hopefully will be in colour in the next couple of months as the weather gets better and before the humidity kicks in up here.

MattR is THE MAN!

lizard, if you have to question maybe it is time to sell. Good luck either way.

What price do you put on enjoyment?

Today I took my NB for a run to have coffee - round trip 45km - got home then got the 86 out and cruised up to the Sunshone Coast and back [126km] - the cost? Couldn't care less I enjoyed it

At present I am off work and in recovery from surgery last week and I'm not one to sit around home all day [I am permitted to drive]

How many coffees do you have each day? [purchased, not self-made]

On workdays I have one each day, 6.30am at a cost of $4 - I know many others have 3-4 or more, hate to say what that costs them

The simple answer is if you can afford to keep it fine, if not then sell and GLWS

Cents-per-kilometer is a pretty poor yardstick to use, since certain costs (rego, insurance, etc) are fixed.
The cost per km for these are going to vary depending on the kilometers you do - the more k's you do, the lower the cost per km is going to be.

So the answer is simple. Just drive it more.

Indeed, my NB8B with 270000km on it has well and truly been economical.

If you take in to account every cent I've spent on the car since new, vs the fun that I (and my wife) have had in it in nearly 15 years, it is a bargain :D

this is a topic I have tried to ignore for a long time!

I have got a few cars but a couple in particular that beyond daily running costs the modification dollar spent/km's dríven is not a good number

I have a 408ci LS motor in a HSV which is showing about 20.4l/100km which is not a good number

375rwkw is a good number though

I obviously need a big block chev instead of the nat asp 1.8 in my car.
My NB8A only gets 23.6l/100km....

Post #9 by Lizard- I think he spelled it out and indicates stock take required.
