Pete, one of the reasons I didn't go the N/A route is the fun is at the top end. Turbo just makes the car very easy to drive and really is the cheaper option - more power for the same dollar.

Dann you wouldn't be the same without the ribbing, please don't stop.

Fast reving: ask Mrs speed what happens when she borrows the Rx7... and that revs to 9k.
NA6 turbo - 140kw atw - not the most powerful but so much fun :D

I ran an atmo 100+rwkw car with biggish road/race cams on the stock ecu, with boosted fuel pressure (NB8A). An ecu came later, and smoothed the idle a bit, but that was the big give-away - the lumpy idle, it is hard to hide if you have big cams, although raising the idle helps.

I used NA6 lifters with the SUB. The ecu can be exxy if you aren't careful, but Haltech PS series should be coming onto the market second hand now that they have a new flagship. Pick your tuner carefully if not DIY, in fact I picked the tuner before I picked the ecu.

It is great fun having a free revving atmo engine, lightened flywheel and cowl induction!

Nice post Dann. its good to hear and informed view on those two routes to more MX5 power! I will even acknowledge that spiel was rather well written :p

Pcmx5, part of me desperately wants to drive your car. Part of me knows it will trigger an expensive chain reaction!! :0

No problem at all, would be nice to meet a few of you guys.
Might take any further discussion over to the travel thread though.

Hmm, interesting to hear that you managed to run good enough on a stock ECU.

Also, are you saying you used NA6 hydros with shims under them?
I might PM you at some stage to pick your brains re: setup.

As does removing some overlap. I've got biggish cams in my NB, and lots of overlap and it sounds like a rotary at idle (had more than a few people think it was)
Recent events saw me change the cam gears, and I've ended up with much less overlap than before and the idle is much more normal like..

Hi.
Nicely written Dan yes you can get a reasonable amount of power without turbo or supercharger. I decided on a fairly simple set of improvements to give me a reasonable increase in power. The plan was to use standard injectors and standard ecu. and see what happens. Also a modified cylinder head 10.5 compression ratio, new valve springs and a set of small cams. A very good set of extractors and exhaust.
The above resulted in 95.7 rwkw and a suggestion to add a fcas?(toy) and map sensor gave 97.6rwkw. This little endeavour was not rocket science and it is fun to have a car which idles just like a standard car and cost less than $3k

They were a Tighe item. Probably mentioned on here but I can't remember the number.

I have Tighe 805c cams and think from my memory of the time I was researching them(about 7 years ago!) that they are ok with a standard ECU.Obviously an aftermarket ECU is always going to provide more tune ability though

Ring Tighe I have found them to be very helpful and knowledgeable.
