Doesn't work. Leak tested at one place and they say the compressor is gone.
It's got weird "conversion" to R134 history in 2007 but it appears to have the original compressor? How would they have done this? Is it a bodge job?
Has anyone done the full conversion and know what parts are used/how it should be done?
Can I go back to R12 and make it work well?
Good A/C places in Newcastle do the full change?
Sorry for the dump of questions and potentially in the wrong subforum.
Also, I deliver hot pizza in pouring rain. Top down comments are good for your post count and don't offer much past that.

The conversion from memory wasn't a big deal, I think there were gases that were able to be used without needing to change the compressor etc. It's likely that was done, since nobody would pay for a new compressor just to convert.
I don;t think you can get R12 anymore, but as above, pretty sure there are alternatives available now.
If the original place said the compressor is fried, and there's no gas leak, then there's a decent chance they're correct, in which case a new compressor would be needed.
Have a look in the for sale section for someone wrecking an NA to see if you can grab one secondhand.
I'm pretty sure I saw someone advertising a full a/c kit not long ago as well?
And yeah, top down is fine, but days when I want aircon are usually the same days I don't want the top off (hey look, it's 40 degrees, i'd better take the roof off and sit in direct sunlight..... that will help)

I wanted to buy a new compressor, service it and have it last a long while.
Will the stock compressor run newer refridgerants? Is there an alternative new compressor/after market stuff?

R12 was restricted in 1989 under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989 (https://www.comlaw.gov.au/Series/C2004A03755) hence the requirement to use R134a. However the use of R134a is also restricted (purchase, handle and or sell) for use by trained, licensed technicians only.
I would suggest that you contact a air con specialist in your area and have them quote a solution. As mentioned unless you are trained/licensed there are not any user servicable parts in the air con system.

I want to be able to source a good compressor for cheap instead of having to pay Australian retail with associated markup. I wondered whether anyone had success in getting the parts together for a good price, took them to an A/C place and got it done, and could point me to where to look to do the same.
I think the majority of people however either:
a) Have working A/C since they got the car.
b) Don't have A/C since they got the car and haven't changed this.
c) Paid an A/C place whatever they were quoted without investigating further.
Which is probably why I don't seem to be finding much information.

Re: Eunos Roadster/NA6 A/C issues.
I thought your question was over gas in the air con, not how to fix an air con cheaply.
All my cars over the years have had their air cons done professionally. Notwithstanding if you keep an eye on the forum full air cons come up for sale.
A) yes
B) yes
C) yes
D) removed AC and gave the parts away, minus the R134a gas. I did try and capture the gas in a plastic soft drink bottle but it was a failure...

How rude of a Business to make a profit... Much better if they didn't, and shut their doors right... You talk like Australian Businesses are just here to rip people off...
With the attitude of "I don't want to pay what its worth" you might struggle to find reliable information, as generally a lot of FACT on forums should be considered very loose FACT...
A/C specialists have to pay for licensing, certification, equipment and wear the overheads of having the Gas on hand. Add to that the typical workshop running costs, wages etc. and you'll find they need to make money of the parts to turn a profit. I've heard of workshops charging higher labour rates (or turning away work) if the customer supplies their own parts.
I'm all for saving a buck, but I must admit, I have taken offense to the attitude more than the concept.
Now with all that said and done, I may know of a complete, used, Import A/C kit available soon if you were interested.

All good. I think one of my other later posts might have given that impression.
I'm definitely getting someone to do it professionally because I'm not keen on trying the plastic bottle trick especially if it ended in failure.
I'll keep an eye out.

Re: Eunos Roadster/NA6 A/C issues.
The compressor required for the Eunos is a Denso 10P13F.
So everyone knows what to look for if they come to this stage.
Need to changeover from R12 hoses because they were more permeable than the current ones running 134 refridgerant. Fittings will probably need to be redone in certain spots so that means cutting and welding metal bits. At this point I'm unsure if the receiver/drier is getting cleaned or replaced altogether, will update when I know. It's a lot of labour and the average cost is 1.5k-2k including parts.
Hopefully this helps someone else.
