It's a fair question Bruce.

2 pack, twin pack and 2k are all the same. Is commonly known and printed as 2k on the labels at paint shops.

The big issue is the filter but that's why I previously said to speak to a paint shop about that. ;)

Then depending upon the paint colour you'll have either a clear over base or base+pearls+clear.

Grab a few measuring pots and 2k thinners when you pick up your paint.

I'm fussy so I usually do 6 coats of clear and when you buff, it tends to go through 1.5 to 2 coats, so you are left with 4.

Being first time, I'd recommend a clear over base as pearls can be tricky to get even coverage.

PS I'm self taught and not a professional panel beater, so please feel free to get another opinion

I remember doing the research into this when I was painting my project guitar.
2k is better (Harder, shinier, less work to do after spraying), but is extremely dangerous and as a result illegal to spray in a backyard/garage (at least in VIC).
You're not going to get perfect results diy anyway (mostly because of dust, if you're not in a pressurised paint booth there will always be some dust), so perhaps the extra cost and health risks aren't worth it?
That being said, plenty of shops will give you less than perfect results and you have to pay them...

Just my two cents, I could understand the argument for both.

This is a before and after of one of my "home jobbies".
No runs, no dry patches, no orange peel and the metallic is even.

The colour is VW's Black Magic Pearl. Has blue, silver and gold metallic flecks if memory serves me correctly.
(All packaged as clear over base - so easy!)

There was a point in time where I was repairing VW'S and Audi's to survive between real jobs, hence all VAG cars in the background.

Geez speed you did a great job on the VW.. The bits I did on the mx didn't look that good.

I'll take some pics of the paint soon- Ive only done the bonnet, guards ,headlight flap and front bumper.
Some runs and with colour on I can see some small dings on the bonnet.
Depending on the weather I may have another crack this weekend.
Hopefully next time the painting will improve ... its just demoralising using my few days off work to paint 1/3 of the car without perfect results. At this rate it will be months to finish the car (also with non perfect results).

I'm thinking about not stressing about the paint, put the car together again and go get a safety cert for rego.
Then I can still enjoy the driving (with peeps like merlin pointing and laughing at my paint ) and either repaint in the next holiday or get some quotes from panel shops.

I cant see why i'd need a good softtop for the rwc - just present the car as 'open'.

This is the boot lid I just received in the post - seems a previous owner has stripped it with a blowtorch. See how the reverse is also cooked I'm not sure how to reseal under the webbing etc.
so im on the lookout for a better straight boot lid - see the for sales
- I'll try to sell both the damaged red one and the black burnt one and then buy a straight one. I'm being honest about their condition hopefully someone may want them for a ducktail conversion or something.

I have another boot lids coming tomorrow, so hopefully I can get some more painting done this weekend.

re: the softtop.

Im about to order a new one - i was going to get a 1 piece but is it better to get the zipper one?

Or is it possible to glue in a new rear piece on my current one is ok accept for the zippered bit?

My NA has a one piece glass window top. Looks the business but I'm missing out on using the semi bikini top function of the zippered window. It's nice not to have to worry about yellowing though.

Ive ordered a plain plastic 1 piece top, i will be on the lookout for parts to have AC so i dont cook.

I did some painting today, but not as much as i hoped. Takes so much time to spray fill, wait to dry sand flat and repeat. Didn't get the colour on yet ;(

I removed the rear guard and the plastic glue on bit, as to paint under them. The mx looks much better without them - I dont want to put them back on.

Starting to make progress.

Needs a sand with 1200 and a cut polish.

Bastard bugs flew in and got stuck in the clear- so i waited a day, sanded it off then applied fresh colour and clear.

in the pics left and right have different wheels. The 16x8s look the business but the chrome is stuffed. I'm going to try reverse electo plating the chrome off and painting them.

I have a new soft top coming - I went with the 1 piece unzippered top with a new rain rail. Im on the lookout for parts to make this car have AC.

Got her registered today. Drove from home to road worthy place to mainroads to home..so now about 40kms on her.
The roadworthy went ok except for a hole in the muffler and needing a new slave and master clutch cylinder. I usually do all this work myself but the mechanic who did the roadworthy was really good -- if your in Toowoomba I recommend Allan Brett in Mort st as a realistic/honest mechanic.
