Would you ceramic coat extractors on a street-only MX5?

Postby madkeen » Thu Jun 25, 2015 3:41 pm

So due to popular demand, (not really), here's another question...

Would you bother ceramic coating a set of Hurricane headers before installing them on a NON-TRACK going NA8? I bought them to hopefully add a bit of grunt and maybe some extra fast-car sound, and they'd be going on with a new pipe and Hurricane muffler.

I've been quoted $230 to ceramic coat the headers. WORTH IT?

(NOTE: I am worried they're going to sit very close to my fibreglass Lack Stewart airbox, creating possible melting issues as well as general heating up of engine bay air temp.)

One of the guys coated his turbo extractors recently.
For your car I wouldn't worry about it. There's not much heat. I'd clean them and DIY heat proof paint them, as $230 is too much for no benefit.

I've got a Loch Stewart close to unshielded headers. It was getting hot so I stuck some heat shield tape on the Lochy. Problem solved, good enough for trackwork.

Yes, I know the engine bay is filthy but at least it's fast.

Ceramic coating stainless steel gives more hard parking cred. Like the Nike slogan "Just do it"

I'd just spraypaint them.

Then if I was concerned about heat i'd just make a heatshield similar to OEM but some form of insulating material (probs just a metal shield backed with fibreglass tape)

Yh, I bught that tape at Repco. One side is adhesive, the other is reflective with a thin slice of insulation in between. I wrapped it around any surrounding hoses as well. I did that about 8 years ago. While some of it is getting a bit ratty it's still working.

Ha! the momentum now appears to have swung the other way TOWARDS coating. I'm thinking of splitting the difference and coating 2 of the 4 pipes! :p

How'd you come to that conclusion?

Posts in order...

No, but maybe if conditions were different.
No

Yes, but as a piss take. I'm counting this as a no.

Yes

I count six nays to one yay, or roughly 15% yes. By that logic I'd only be coating ~57% of one of the pipes.

Haha! I like your thinking.

I also factored in some of the links that this thread directed me to that more positive about ceramic coating. :0

Speaking for 85% of the people in this thread.. Spend your money and stop pretending you aren't just looking for a justification. We don't care.
