They're both a B series Mazda engine, one just has 200cc more.

This is really like asking "what's better, this apple, or this slightly larger apple?"

The 1.8 has more power stock.

16L would be pretty good I'd have thought, but 18L seems even better.

The extra weight makes the understeer worse, but I guess you could just change the PS pulley if it's too bad ...

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

Depends what you prefer - best to have a drive of a 1.6 MX5 as well as a 1.8 MX5.

1.6L is absolutely much more fun, more revier (if thats a word). Has good power if you have a/c delete and PS delete.

The 1.6 is more competitive in a 1.6 liter motor sport category than the 1.8 is in a 2.0L category.

I've dríven a 1.6 as well as my two 1.8 cars.
Didn't notice much difference, I felt that the 1.6 was a touch easier to ring out but I put that down to the shorter diff.
The 1.6 does sound the nicest to my ears, though.

Unless you're specifically going for a 1600 class, you're kidding yourself if you think the 1.6 is a better engine in any measurable way.
