EOI: NB Aluminimum coolant reservoir GB

Postby Lokiel » Tue Jun 23, 2015 3:57 pm

FrankB on MT.net is making a few of these NB coolant reservoirs (US$125):

See http://www.miataturbo.net/miata-parts-sale-trade-5/aluminum-cowl-located-washer-tanks-nb-coolant-resevoirs-84352/

I'm interested in getting one and am prepared to organise a mini Group Buy to save on S&H if anyone else is interested.

I've contacted Frank and he's happy to make a batch of these but, he informed me "I will be out on a field exercise from mid July to mid August so I'd like to get the tanks out before I leave for that as I will be unreachable during that time".

With most Group Buys, it seems it's better to keep them small so that they can fill quicker, avoid procrastinators, and to keep them under the A$1000 Import Duty limit so I'd like to try and get at most 6 orders by Friday (based on today's US$ exchange rate, that keeps it under A$1,000).

Shipment will be via UPS since I don't trust USPS and Frank suggested it. All items will be shipped together to save on S&H but we don't know what that will be yet (Frank's a DIYer, not a company).

I've suggested to pay up front to make the coolant reservoirs, followed by a subsequent payment once the items have been made and S&H costs are known - saves sending refunds.

If you're interested in one of these, please add yourself to the list below:

Notes:
* This is a buy for the NB coolant reservoir only since I'd like to get this going ASAP.
* Frank does have an NA coolant reservoir design but he informed me: "While I have the NA design done I need to get another template cut and sent to the waterjet service I use which will add some time for them to make a CAD and duplicate it for me. If the are all NB's I can go ahead and try to get a head start on the batch for the sake of time."

After checking the thread over on MT.net I couldn't see any mention of the capacity of this tank....

Is it larger or smaller than the standard NB tank?

Note: the NB SE factory tank is ~300cc larger than the standard NB tank to account for the larger radiator capacity.

If you have a larger capacity, aftermarket radiator you would want the tank to be bigger than the factory NB tank if possible.
I have a standard NB tank on my SE with a mid sized aftermarket radiator (Koyo 37mm, so bigger than the factory SE rad) and it works ok so far but the level fluctuates quite a bit from cold to hot, so not a huge buffer there..... :|

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I hadn't thought of that but MINX has an aluminimum replacement that's about the same size and he hasn't reported any issues (I think he's still using the MSM/SE radiator):

FrankB's version has a level indicator which is a bonus.

Me too. I saw one spot left and thought "look away! look away!"
Maybe we can do another small buy at the end of year/in the future

Frank welcomes the orders so please keep that in mind for his NA/NB reservoirs and washer bottles.

I targetted this GB specifically for NB coolant reservoirs since I wanted one, figured there would be a demand for them and could save on S&H with a bulk buy, and the NAs aren't quite ready yet so I didn't want that delaying the order.

... will post installation pics and review when they arrive for anyone curious about the quality of the coolant reservoir.
