I think its time to discuss how I actually bought the car, in fact it is actually owned half by my father who is not the biggest car-nut, the goal was to find a car that would require little work, I could play with and buy stuff for, he could drive and enjoy while not quite feeling like having a midlife crisis! After looking at cars in our price range we settled on the NA6, (thankfully even he was not taken on the Ford Capris) after looking at a few in dealerships none felt quite right to either of us, until KevGoat's mexxie came up for sale.
Instantly we knew we had to at least come and look at it, as soon as we looked at it we knew that it was the one, the pages of info, the well maintained mechanics and the paint that was just that perfect level of blemished that we would actually be happy driving it all the time!
After an RAA report, deciding not to buy the car, and then changing that decision when we both realised it was a poor move not to, we ended up with our first MX-5.
I had previously owned an AW11 Mr2 and going from that to this originally was a little... disappointing, I had never had a sports car before and the Mr2 was mid engined and sharp and new, but now looking back in hindsight I dont think I have gotten better value from a little car ever before and it is definitely faster than my old Mr2! Even after the first few months I knew there was going to be a long relationship.
I can't believe that it has almost been 2 years of owning this car! I thought in recognition of this milestone (being the longest time I have owned a car) I should finally do a Garage write up on it.
So, she started off as this;
An NA6 MX-5 in a (slightly faded) red, stock wheels in fantastic condition, a Brown Davis rollbar, NB8B seats, spruced interior, tow hooks and a decent soft top. A set of extractors and advanced timing gave it a little more go.
This state lasted longer than I was expecting and it was a number of months before the coilovers were fitted, with the help of KevGoat (the previous owner) a new, lower, stiffer mexxie was born.
There were only a few photo opportunities before the new wheels went on, namely with a friends yellow Ta22 that needed a jump.
Soon after came the new wheels, relatively cheap, light and almost new Re001's couldn't go a miss! (Note the home made torque-extender-2000 aka an only 1/4 inch broom handle)
Finally sitting much better!
So this is how mexxie lasted for close to a year, being daily dríven by myself (the BCs are really comfortable!) we racked up the Kms, driving to work and uni, and spending the weekends driving all over the state, there is a surprising amount of space in these cars when you know where to look!
From here we decided that the peeling vinyl on the soft top had to be replaced, after some extraordinary quotes to get this done we went down the route of the glass soft top. After a bit of searching and waiting one came up in the right price range and we managed to fit it without damaging our rain rails (Not bad for rookies, huh)
The demisters WILL be wired in at some point in the future! But until then it is a million times better than the aging vinyl!
Funnily enough a Carbon Fibre hardtop came up for sale at the time that I as looking for one, however a factory one came up for sale at a good price as soon as I had bought the carbon one
Here we see dad deliberating over the decision of which one to keep...
However great the carbon one looked it still need the ancillories for it to work, including rear glass (A major PITA) so we opted for the factory hard top!
With the new roofs purchased we continued to enjoy the car, racking up another thousand Kms here, and another thousand there (depending on the weather of the weekend of course)
It was about then that I began travelling again and after returning from Tassie and realising how many fantastic roads there were over there I started formulating a plan...

I thought after almost 2 years I should begin a thread updating everyone on the happenings! As soon as I can finish uploading and resizing images the next part will be up!

The Adventure Begins
Let me set the scene; It was late 2014, exams had just finished, I had an open invitation for a free house in Melbourne and Hobart for the entire summer, flights were not cheap and a hire car was not what I had in mind for a car to take around Tasmania.
It was in this moment that (Naturally) I decided to drive.
Of the 3 cars in my possession - Comfortable Subaru wagon, 2 Door convertible 25 year old sports car, Hill Climb set up GTi Swift - there was no competition, the Subaru could fit 5, was turbo charged, was secure to leave places, had heaps of room for my swag and camping gear, decent ground clearance and had All Wheel Drive.
Naturally I chose the Mx-5 (was there ever any choice when it came to Tassie??)
After many many many minutes of planning the journey was finalised and a departure date of the 26th of December was decided upon (Thought process - I wanted to be recovered after the Christmas celebrations before beginning the journey - lol)
The plan so well thought out was thus:
Leave Adelaide at 9:00am on the 26th
Camp with some friends between Adelaide and Melbourne until the 30th
Arrive in Melbourne with enough time to buy supplies and get set up for New Years
Leave Melbourne on the 4th of January 2015
Arrive in Tasmania sometime after that
Pretty solid plan right?
So that's how it started, at 2:30pm on the 27th we were packing ready to leave, by 3:00pm mum had come out to help fit everything in
For those wondering how much stuff you can fit in an Na6?
Heres the list:
2 young adults
2 Laptops
1 camera + bag
1 car fridge (yes, a car fridge)
Half Dozen bottles of wine
3 Bottles of fortifieds
2 duffel bags full of clothes
4 pairs of shoes
2 suits
1 Single person Bike swag
1 roll mat
1 sleeping bag
1 hike stove (Dragonfly Whisper Lite - Killer little stove)
1 set of MSR pots
1 bottle of fuel
2 brandy glasses
1 camp seat
(no) brandy - A big over sight -
many hats
many sunglasses
sunscreen
drink bottles
Yes some of this stuff had to be crammed into the crevasses of the car, and yes I still think I'll be pulling out camping gear in the future years BUT it all managed to fit.
It was at about 3:30pm when we were about to leave, already late, that I learnt that my friend who would be accompanying me to Melbourne couldn't really drive a manual, and at about 4:30pm we were told that the other group had decided to skip the camp spots and start getting drunk in Melbourne. Due to the fact I was sitting next to the owner of the house the incentive to get to Melbourne before midnight heightened.
Here is our (my) one and only stop between Adelaide & Melbourne
However, despite all of that the Mx-5 was EXTREMELY comfortable, I mean, my back got sweaty and my arms were sore due to the fridge crammed between the two seats, but even without cruise control the drive was comfortable, forgiving and something that I would do again if I wanted to explore the VIC mountains. I DEFINITELY recommend sourcing some NB8B seats for your Na6!
Arriving in Melbourne I tentatively parked on a less than ideal stretch of road, especially with a rowdy New Years approaching (Sadly mexxie did not survive having her antenna covered in sausages and an empty beer bottle... not too impressed, beer does not do good things to paint)
With this in mind I decided to fit the car into the "car park" at the back of the house. Well, I'll let the pictures talk but it was quite literally millimeter close.
There was no more room on either side, or behind with the gate. I think calling it a car park was a polite term!
However from the kitchen I would be able to see that no harm was being done.
This is how it stayed for a couple of days until New Years had passed, the Illegal fireworks had all been set off (not by us!) and I was ready to move on.
Excuse the images, I didnt bring a tripod and its understandably hard taking photos of fireworks, on new years, under the influence
After sorting out my tickets, and where I actually had to go, I got up exceedingly early (Thankfully before the house had to be fully cleaned) and made my way to the docks for the long ferry journey to a little island known as Tasmania. I got some extremely strange looks as a disheveled man folded himself out of a packed convertible at 5:30am claiming he was going to be in tassie for the next 2 months with only what he had in his car!

Fitting your list of stuff in would have been a piece of cake compared to wedging your mate in
