NA6 Wheels Stick Out!!

Postby aladdin96 » Sat Jun 06, 2015 5:00 pm

Hi I bought wheels for my Mx5 from a private seller and when I went to fit them on they looked absolutely amazing. However, they stick out a tiny bit. People were telling me that it is illegal. What can i do to stick it under the guard. Please help me out. CheersImageImageImage

Wrong offset/wrong wheels. Get difft wheels as they stick out a mile.

They're almost certainly rota grid V's in 15x8 +0 offset.
You can sort of make them fit with lowering and the extra camber that frees up, but if you want wheels that actually fit you'll need to look elsewhere.
Not the end of the world, someone will snap those up fairly quickly if you move them along.

I was thinking of lowering with king springs and also put some fender flares. But kinda wanna avoid flares, so would lowering fix it up and potentially hide it.?? Cheers

Check with your state (Vicroads/RTA/etc) as to what the rules are about wheels.

About all you can do is get different wheels, lowering and camber will maybe get them to tuck in, but they'll still be illegal (there are rules about width and offset)

I searched it up and all its says about QLD is that wheels should not stick out of bodywork. People tell me to roll my guards and im good to go.

Would cops give me a fine or a warning with defect?

That depends mostly on the cop.
Worst case is fined and defected, best case is they either don't notice (unlikely) or give you a wag of the finger and tell you to fix it..

Are you in QLD?

If so, then the top half of the wheels need to be inside the bodywork, the bottom half can stick out.

You can go any width wheel, and the tyres can only be 30% wider than the widest possible factory fitted option.

Total offset change allowable is 25mm. So you can only change the wheel's offsets by 12mm each. But this one is overlooked by most authorities.

If you are from another state, then just google "small vehicle mods XXX" and put your state where the XXX are. Find the pdf that relate to allowable minor mods for your state.

I absolutely love the aggressive looks on the 89 mx5. I decided to keep the wheels and potentially do something with the flares to keep it hidden. I am absolutely not a hoon. All i love to do is cruise and rev it enough for the exhaust note to peak. But i never speed. Ill keep the stocks daisy wheels and roll on with the rota grids. Amazing wheels. Ill try my chances and ill work on the flares to keep it legal. Cheers
