Weird Headlights

Can anyone tell me what this guy has done to his headlights, they look a little darker than usual and i would love to replicate them.

Got a specific time that shows the headlights well?

From what I saw it looked as though it'd had the inserts painted black.

Is that illegal, i imagine it would stop the inserts reflecting properly

Probably, but that's mostly based on the assumption that just about anything you modify is illegal.

Most of the ones I have seen (inlcuding the ones Mazda did themselves for the SE) have only painted the front parts of the inner housing, not the mirrored reflector part.

As for legal, probably not, but if you do a neat job it's unlikely anybody will notice.
