NA MX5 INTAKE SETUP!!

Panel filter vs Pod filter is really hard to say, a sh*t brand pod will be worse than a good panel.

A good pod will be better than a sh*t panel.

Even cheap panel filters seem to be better at filtering than a cheap pod.
Generally I much prefer panel filters, cheap, easy to shake clean, easy to replace.

But in saying that, pod filters are much simpler to fit in the bay.

Would i get induction noise from myset up which i will fix and connect the windscreen with a panel filter?. Cheers

Just curious as to how effective this intake is to other intakes out there as it looks as if its able to occupy a larger amount of air.

Here's mine to give you more of an idea.

Many of us have bought a round 3" galvanised gutter spout from a plumbing shop, cut it down to about 1" long and brought it in from the windscreen side to give a short sort of shaft that you can slide the Lochie over to locate it the firewall end.

If I get time tomorrow I'll get a better shot of the back end which might explain it better.

If you decide not to rebuild it please don't ditch it. They're probably not valuable but they do have some iconic status as one of the first Australian made mods for an MX5. Someone, like nitrodann, with a sense of history about the cars here would appreciate it. Cheers

Googling "Loch Stewart CAI" images helps too. :oops:

You usually need to make some fibreglass mods to adapt it neatly to the different inlet of an NA8 MAF sensor.

BTW aladdin96, that engine in your photo at the start of this topic is an NA6 1600.

Yes I was aware of the engine an NA6. I've owned an NA6 mx5 before but it was bone stock. 0 mods. However i wanted to modify my new NA6 mx5. I was looking at this intake and did some research and realised how iconic this intake is. I will be changing it to the simota enclosed pod filter and pvc pipe the rest.

Don't if its better or not. But because the previous was old he probably thought what a stupid idea for an intake. To be honest when I was on my learners and saw this intake for the first time I was like WTH. But i now understand its potential.

If i should keep it how do i fix it. My father who was a panel beater and mechanic said he may have an idea. But for trouble free thinking, if anyone knows how it could be done please let me know. Cheers

Having had one of those original Loch Stewart intakes (and exhaust) in my first NA6 I can vouch for the intake roar, and additional power added.

I have been looking at the enclosed pod filters. There's a Simota brand enclosed one for $76 and another one with a carbon fiber look but no brand for $25. Which one do you guys reckon I should go with. Cheers

Damn, Simota have stepped the cost up!

A few years back some magazine did a test and found the Simota brand filters to be the best compromise of flow and filtration.

Back then the Simota enclosed filter was about $40 or so....

Generally I try to get at least a branded filter, even if it's not a great brand. I figure if they're willing to let you know who made the item there's a better chance it actually filters somewhat ok.

But $76 for a simota sounds like a rip, I think the K&N filters aren't that much more, and they're a vastly better filter anyway.

I was looking at k&n enclosed filters and there over a hundred dollars. So I bought the simota one and it should arrive sometime this week. Excited. The firewall is already drilled. But would you know where i can put the washer bottle. And how? Cheers

Referring to the photo below you will notice that the water bottle has been moved to close to the upper suspension damper mounting mount.

Two ways of the doing this.

1. I believe that you need to make a bracket for this.....probably from something like aluminium.
2. Drill one (or two) holes into the mounting point and attach the water bottle.

Another option is to get a washer bottle from a Suzuki Cappuccino as per the photos below. There was a group buy on these a few years ago.

I ordered everything and going to go to supercheap auto get all the mounts and pvc stuff. Ill follow the photo and make some kind of bracket to keep it still.

There are normally a few unused holes located around the arch there, so you can put a bolt into them.

Alternatively, when I had mine I just cable tied it to whatever was there.
