NA MX5 INTAKE SETUP!!
Hi Guys I bought an mx5 and the previous owner has done really weird stuff with the intake. Photo below. I was maybe wondering should i change it or is it a good setup and position. I was thinking of the intake that gathers air from the windscreen from mx5 mania . Let me know a good idea for performance. Please enthusiasts and experienced mx5 owners reply. Cheers

Have no idea. And yes it looks like the end has been cut out. But the panel filter is in there and everything.

Re: NA MX5 INTAKE SETUP!!
If the previous owner has chopped the end off what they have successfully done is take a perfectly functional, and somewhat rare, cold air intake and have turned it into a something worse than stock.
For reference, the unchopped versions have a snout that leads to the firewall. The washer bottle is moved, and a 3inch hole is cut into the firewall to let the intake draw cold, high pressure, air from the cowl area.
The unmodified ones work well, albeit with the detriment of sucking leaves in quite easily (just means you need to clean it more often than normal)
By cutting off the end the previous owner has now made it draw warm air from directly near the exhaust...
at least they're only fibreglass, so you should be able to buy a fibreglass kit and rebuild the cut off bit.

The bloke i bought of was bit of an old guy who tried to make the car as clean as possible. But the intake was a mistakw just by looking at it. What do you think of the intake by mx5 mania

Re: NA MX5 INTAKE SETUP!!
The Mania one is a good alternative, since ti works in exactly the same way as the one you have is supposed to.
My only gripe with the Mania one is that it sucks leaves in from the cowl (no different to any cowl intake really)
And I personally think it's vastly overpriced.
A few years ago I made a mania style intake, $30 Simota pod filter, $5 PVC pipe, $5 PVC pipe reducer, and a can of satin black paint.
Worked fine, sounded good. Visually it looked ok, but not great. If I had spent some time I would have sanded the edges of the pipes smooth so it looked like one piece.
I gave it away because it got annoying, and I got sick of having to remove it and shake the leaves out every 2 weeks.
I've now just got a short coldside intake I put together, it still needs a tidy up though since I had to cut a few corners the other week (missing a couple of bits)

Re: NA MX5 INTAKE SETUP!!
I was thinking of doing, getting a pod filter, pvc pipes. And do it myself. For the leaves im thinking maybe a grill type of thing at the end of the pipe so that leaves dont come in.

Re: NA MX5 INTAKE SETUP!!
Hks_kansei I went out to have a look under the windscreen and they have already cut a hole for the intake. What the previous owner did was put some type of rubber mat and hooked up the washer bottle on it. What are your thoughts. Should i make a new one or just fix ot back again. Cheers

''Just do this , not the bit closest, but the bit at the screen"
mine is fitted with an aftermarket ECU, so doesn't have an air flow meter.
Buy some fiberglass resin, some matting and styrofoam and carve a plug, non stick treatment, glass over and ya done.
BTW, don't cut the matting pull it apart or your glassing will fail.

Re: NA MX5 INTAKE SETUP!!
Ok cool. Cheers for the help. However was wondering whats better the panel filter or pod filter. And as soon as i hook everything to the under the windscreen would i get that induction sound again.
