Installation of extinguisher

Hi all.

Just getting my car ready for the track, and wondering where is the best place to install the extinguisher.

I was thinking of r he passenger floor, but there's not a lot of room, and it still needs to be able to fit my wife.

Where do you guys have yours? Pics would be great if possible.

Mine is mounted using the 2 front passenger seat bolts. Doesn't interfere with leg room, it's too close to the seat, so legs go over the top, feet would never be where it's mounted. I got the bracket off Mattyredlocks, who I think bought it off the MX5 club. MX5 Mania sell something similar, mounts with the same 2 bolts etc.

Thanks very much! No idea why I didn't search first,that seems to be the usual way to mount an extinguisher in a car.

So you didn't have any problem with the seat bolts not being long enough?
A few of the threads I've seen recommend buying longer bolts, so I just wanted to double check.

It can be a little tough to get the bolts to grab the thread, you need to push the seat rail down hard and wind the bolt in a few turns. Longer bolts wouldn't be a bad idea, but I have managed without.

Ended up getting longer bolts from Supercheap, just to make sure I had no issues.
Fabricated my bracket out of 2 pieces of fridge metal.
I was planning to just use the bolts to hold it together, but decided to add a few rivets for extra blind factor.

Will post a pic tomorrow, if I remember.

Yep - the one Trackphotos has I originally bought from the Victorian MX-5 club (the Queensland club wouldn't sell something like that - only cardigans in their store), but then I mounted it on the rollbar instead - didn't fit with the new seats I got.

Probably will end up cutting a new bracket for the footwell, one of these days...

I knocked one up last weekend for a hurried first track day in the MX5 (only decided to enter on the Tuesday before the event...)

Mine is made from computer rack shelving, cut to shape with an angle grinder :shock:

. Worked a treat, although it does restrict forward movement of the seat a little. It could have been mounted slightly further forward, but I was worried it may be a nuisance if it was too close to the passenger's feet.

I used longer bolts, and also put some very thick washers on top of the Mazda seat mount and under the extinguisher bracket as the existing factory seat mount bolts are "recessed" inside the seat rail a little. Old Datsun manifold washers worked a treat ! (and also provided the longer bolts).

I'll probably make another (better) one and paint it up when I get some spare time, this one took all of about quarter of an hour to make (and it shows) :oops:

Passed scrutineering no worries though

I put mine between the seat rails and floor, that way it doesn't get distorted by the bolts/recess. Made it quite hard to get the bolts in, due to the seat being slightly angled, but it turned out ok.

From the looks of the above images, the NB has quite a bit of extra space in the foot well.

The first one took me hours, with the measuring and making a template etc, and I still made the holes too close by 10mm.

This one took less than an hour I think. I know it probably should have been quicker, but it's 2 sheets of metal, which equals more than twice the work.

My old one was basically the same, just a sheet of steel and through the seat bolts.

I think back then the CAMS requirement was a 2g load without deflection of something? it managed it, just. thicker steel would have been fine.

I should really find out where it went and throw it up on the free section of the forum.

The cams requirement says it has to withstand 25g under deceleration. NFI how they intend to determine whether it meets that standard or not.

I must have been mistaken.

My bracket would have probably held 25g, but not without bending etc.

testing would be as simple as yanking on the bracket with 25x it's weight (so a 1kg extinguisher + case weight + bracket weight, maybe 2kg all up?, so you'd yank on it with 50kg and see if it breaks off)
