Here's a video of the noise. Pretty nasty injector if thats what it is haha. Car runs fine other than the noise. After watching it again, it sounds expensive, very expensive.

Whats the most common cause of that? Stretched valve? Or rod damage? My mechanic did suggest this as a possibility but not possible causes.

Big end or small end bearing failure, stretched/broken big end bolt, bent piston pin, cracked piston, etc. The risks of dyno tuning. Nothing you'd want to find. Are you certain it's inside the engine and not just some ancilliary?

Borrow the bore scope again and check your piston tops again for signs of touching the head. Or else get a mechanic with plenty of experience with bad noises. Run a compression test yet?

The tuners did a bit of diagnosing and they had all the accessory belts off and they said the noise didn't change. My plans for this weekend are to compression and leak down test it, then take the timing belt (and accessory belts in the process) off and have a look around that area as well as run the car and use a stethoscope to have a good listen. Will basically just keep trying to eliminate possibilities until I just have to take the whole bloody thing out to find out whats wrong.

You need to be careful about running up diagnosis costs. It's fine if you do it yourself but costly if you're paying.

I hate to be pessimistic but we had an NB8B engine sounding like that at Wakefield earlier in the year. Oil pump failure --> spun big end bearing, destroyed main bearing, terminally scored piston and bore, cam bearing damage --> no salvageable parts. Remember that you can get a decent NB8B motor for around $1,500. In this case the cost of stripping down a pile of junk was as much as a new motor. :cry:

I will be doing the work on it from now on. They only did some stuff initally to see if it was an issue that oculd be fixed then and there. Car has been home for a week now. I'm expecting it to be terminal, so no amount of pessimism will phase me. There are some markings on the bores but not from something gouging into it. Will post pictures tonight.

My SE bent a rod on the dyno when the clutch decided to let go. No damage to the bearings, pistons or bore but piston was hitting on oil squirter which got bent. Rods and clutch were replaced and oil squirter bent back and all was good

If it were due to the clutch it would be an over rev and that almost never ever ever bends rods. Even if it was an over rev, the operator should have had a rev limiter set. What a noob.

Slugracer, it wasn't a full rebuild then? Can you give more detail at all? Trying to get an idea of how much wallet upset I'm in for.

...and i'll happily take the bottom end, as long as the block is not cracked... might even take the head too if the price is right (minus valve gear) ;)

Yeah um, if its terminal I'll be using what I have now for the rebuild. I'd say I'm sorry but, well, I'm not haha. Vultures be gone!

Sorry I don't really have any more info. The tuner/mechanics replaced the rods for free, I paid for a new clutch. They now make customers sign a waiver before their cars go on the dyno. I guess you won't know the extent of the damage or what's damaged until you pull the engine apart

If you isolate cylinders (remove leads) you can shut down combustion on a cylinder. It helps to diagnose big end knock. I have personally heard big end knock that sounded like lifter noise/VCT knock
