Cheaper to buy parts from Mazda Australia

Recently, i needed to buy a couple oem parts and found that buying direct from Mazda Australia was much cheaper option than buying from overseas whether it be in the UK or USA.
As an example i paid only $7.70 for a throttle body gasket from Mazda Australia. This would of cost me double if i had bought it from overseas because of the exchange rate and cost of shipping.
Anyway the point of this post is to highlight that you should check out Mazda Australia first for your oem parts which might end up being cheaper and you get it much faster assuming you live close by to a parts department.

The cheap parts like you example yes are always easier and cheaper from within Australia without post.

But once you start looking at parts that go into the 100s, then overseas is better.

Mazda Australia don't want to sell older MX5 parts period. I have tried several times to buy parts from Mazda Australia for my NB over the last 18 months only to be told that the parts would have to be ordered in with a 6 to 8 week wait or the part is no longer available in Australia. It got so bad that I don't even bother trying to get anything directly from Mazda any more. I can buy OEM parts online from OS generally substantially cheaper than Mazda Aus want and they will be at more door weeks before Mazda Aus can supply them. Why shop locally?

And how fun is the "whats your vin number" question everytime.
You tell them that the engine is not even close to what came in the car but you have the part number you want to order.
They still get angry at me and demand a vin number or they can not order it...

I too gave up long ago on Mazda Aus parts department.

i'm surprised to hear about peoples bad experiences. Although i've only dealt with mazda rockdale and they have been fantastic.
I also asked them for the price on a more expensive item, an idle air speed control valve and it was ~$500 which was cheaper than getting it from amayama. Shipping time of 2 weeks from Japan was also quite reasonable.

The gent is giving you his experience and nothing wrong with checking the local source. Mechanics will often buy parts from the quickest source and that can be same day. Cost is what is landed with freight etc and convenience with car off road is a pain. Mazda ask for a VIn for a simple reason and same goes for Toyota. I have an old car not a Mazda and always get asked for the VIN and there are so many variations on some vehicles. try getting parts for shoe Euro cars even late models things and find that service is poor and very expensive.

Never been asked for a VIN at any dealership.

I've always just asked for X part for a 99 MX5, and if there's any questions they have always been happy to turn the computer screen around to show me the diagrams and confirm it's the correct one.


I tend to get most of my parts through Bursons etc though, it often works out cheaper than Mazda, a lot of Mazda's spare parts these days are from outside manufacturers anyway, Mazda just have them packaged in their own labels.

I'm on the negative side of Mazda Australia Parts as well from my experience.
I have only ever dealt with AHG McGrath Liverpool in Moorebank. Will have to try another to see if it's just them or Mazda Parts in General.

General service parts like filters, no problems. Too bad I don't buy them through Mazda Australia, MX-5 Mania is my supply for that stuff as they get items from Mazda Japan, not Mazda of Taiwan or China like Mazda Australia does.
However bits I have required have been unavailable, long wait or ridiculous pricing.

Parts they have not been able to get for me:
NB Battery Tray
NB8B Headlight Protector Clips. Indecently they can't get the Headlight Protectors either.
NB8B Brake Fitting kits (The springs Front and Rear) They Sell front pads with the fitting kit, but you cannot get the rears with the fitting kit. I don't need their pads!!! Factory Sumitomo's on the front of my SE were rubbish. Rear Akebono's are good.
NB8B Calliper rebuild kit which contains all the rubbers. (This is really bad since NB8B's, NC, RX-8 and some 323's all have the same parts in the kit.)

They just tell me the brake parts are not available and they cannot get them from Japan, which I know is crap, because I can see them online on US Mazda Dealer/Service websites.
They only want to sell the whole calliper for something like $500 a side.

And I don't know about being cheaper.
I wanted 2 front hubs for my SE, they wanted $600 a side!!! This to me is a general service item for a car of this age. The Mazdaspeed ones that Deckspeed sources from the States is less than half the price. Just transfer your ABS rings across.

I will agree that small parts are cheaper from Mazda Australia though like random bolts and clips, if they can find them in their system.

Mazda Aus managed to find a battery tray for me and it was fairly well priced but it took a lot of searching.

Caliper rebuild kits are available from Mazda Japan. I got mine rebuilt in February.

I'm surprised they are selling Japanese brake pads. When I enquired a few years ago they were only selling "Mazda approved" reboxed Bendix pads without the clips or shims.

Amayama is the way to go, I've used them a few times.

Recently I was after a front brake slider pin with the rubber sleeve at the end for my NC.
Time was critical as a track day was a week away and the one on the car fell apart when I was greasing it up.
I rang "The Biggest Dealer" in Sydney. Went through the vin number bit, said I wanted the one with the rubber sleeve (it's the same as the NB) not the plain one. They said there's one in AU and they'd get it up from Melbourne the next day and would ring when it got in. "Give me your credit card details."
Three days later I rang them. "Yes it's here." So much for them ringing me.
Went to pick it up and I could see it sitting in the plastic bag on the shelf.
Nah, can't be mine there's no rubber sleeve.
"Here it is Sir" and passed it over. Not what I ordered, "Yes it is"
You get the drift.
Ordered two from the UK and they arrived the day after the track day, two for the same price as one from Mazda AU.

As others have said, it really depends on the part. I bought an OEM part recently from the US that was $100 cheaper than local, even after I'd paid shipping from over there.

The VIN defines the vehicle and that's why it's important. I don't see why it's difficult to provide the info. Toyota as an example still ask for Vins even for cars that are decades old because they made so many changes and had so many variations. The Landcruiser was built to different specs with apparently 1000's of varations.

Because the vin for my car Japanese import that has nothing it originally did from the factory makes the guy tell everytime that my vin is wrong.

Now i just have a few vins i use from othet cars depending on the parts vintage.
Although more recently i dont bother and just use overseas sellers.

I fail to see why i can not just call with a part number and order that.
Or even just say i want a thermostat gasket for a 1990 Mazda Mx5 without a vin.

Even Renault allow me to do that!!
