Ceramic coating headers

Thinking of buying a set of extractors and having them ceramic coated

Anyone done this?

Happy with outcome?

NA8 for Fun, CX5 for carrying crap...;)

I used Competition Coatings at Acacia Ridge, they did an awesome job on my exhaust bits:

I can't comment on durability as I haven't yet started the car with the new setup!

Are they Stainless? If so, it is advised to leave them uncovered/uncoated. Stainless will fatigue faster if it holds heat more. Leave it uncovered and it won't fail as soon.

If they're Mild steel, coat away. i doubt you'll see temps over 800 degrees (at the port of the header, right near the flange) Naturally aspirated so you shouldn't need anything too extreme. Even just heat wrap would do the trick, and look better in my opinion...

Wrap is cheaper, but can encourage rust and premature fatigue of the steel underneath. (granted, I've never known anyone who's had an issue within a normal lifetime of the part)


I've always just used high temp paint, cheap, easy, doesn't encourage rust (does the opposite) and you don't spend the next 4 days itching like with the wrap.

The downside of paint is that unlike the wrap it does not prevent heat radiating out from the pipes.

Looking at Hurricane ms headers
Ceramic coating is supposed provide better performance, cooler engine bay
Pretty as stainless but Not as brittle
All up cost $600....

I'd go coating over wraps too due to the reasons said above, Here's an article on the subject (I think it's from someone selling coating so take it with a grain of salt if you want to) http://www.centuryperformance.com/exhau ... t-use.html

My personal experience is that I had my first manifold on my Evo crack with a coating on it. When I got around to replacing it with a full-race manifold we didn't put anything on it, instead the workshop put a couple of tabs onto it and made a custom heat shield for it as they said that's the way they prefer to do it.

For my MX5 I don't have any coating either as I don't see the need but have considered one of these http://trackdogracing.com/heatshield.aspx

If you can afford it its ceramic paint, and does nothing to keep heat in. If you need to keep it in (why?) Wrap them.

Yeesss... Except it sounds like what you want is to improve performance through coating, and the consensus is that it's unlikely. So you would be failing to achieve what you want.

I had my headers coated in my old Clubman, made a pretty huge difference to under bonnet temperatures.
