Hi guys, the names Nathan. I'm a new member here and a have a problem with alcohol. (jokes)
I was actually referred to by another inactive member, who had his mx5 written off to join and i'm glad I've found this!
I've got a mx5 NB8B, it's my first car and i love it to bits, however i've been getting problems. I'm not too sure if i should be worried.
Lately the car has been turning off at idle. I was also driving through Wetherhil park and maybe 20 minutes into it, it would shut down.
You can turn it over, but won't fire. I would then give it a 10 minute break, then it would start!
I would describe the car to start chugging and go through very rough idle. As the engine begins to slow down i'd press the accelerator
and it would begin to splutter and exhaust would continuously pop. I'm also having to smell bad fumes.
A couple friends have suggested these problems
- Fuel Filter
- Fuel Pump
- Cam Angle Sensor
- Spark Plugs
I know a general overview about cars, so please pardon my lack of knowledge.
Any help or suggestions as to where i should be looking at, would be appreciated.
If anyone lives locally, around liverpool. I don't mind you popping by to have a look.
Cheers,
Nathan

I want to help you because you made a decent attempt to reach out, unfortunately I like many forum members can't diagnose such an issue this way.
I would suggest taking it to a mechanic. Spark could be off, fuel filter may be clogged etc.

Welcome! Nice choice in car
I'd add EGR main relay, blocked air filter, O2 sensors, coils, plug wires and dirty throttle body to the list of possible causes.

I'd add MAF sensor potentially. That sounds like how it would run (or not) if it was unplugged. Check that too and blast the little element with some electrical contact cleaner.

If you are good with diy I would troubleshoot those areas suggested above.
Though it does sound like a cas.

Welcome Nathan!
As already said it could be a number of things, but probably the most common on an NB8B would be the CPS & the EGI relay.
CPS:

EGI:

(SOLVED) Re: NB8B Problems (Rough Idle, Bad Fumes, Need Help
Hey guys!
I know it's been a while but this is how it went.
I replaced myself:
- Fuel Filter
- Spark Plugs
The spark plugs were extra crispy when taken out, and the car significantly ran better after changing the fuel filter.
However that didn't solve the problem.
I then visited Mick @ Hume Smash, he popped in a new CAS and it still happened.
Turned out to be the fuel pump - so i had that replaced.
The car hasn't missed a beat since then. Thanks again for the suggestions guys!
