SE coil solutions
Firstly apologies for my seeming to be hogging the Electronics section recently. Maybe it's understandable though as the car is now 11 years and 145,000kms old?
Anyway, the coil packs are starting to fail.
Toyota COPs have been suggested, as have LS1 or LS2 coils, and there's the fab9 kit too.
Can anyone please share cast iron experience and/or certainty of how any of these perform on an SE, preferably one running a standalone ECU, preferably a Haltech PS1000 and up to 11psi?

UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Have a look at Lokiel's recent posts in his garage thread.

Re: SE coil solutions
Lokiel has had lots of troubles with coil packs, but he's running an Adaptronic. Not sure of the capabilities of Haltech, though I am interested.
The Haltech forums might be a good place to find some answers, though you probably won't get MX-5 specific information surely others have tried different coil packs over there and can report on the ability to fire them or not.
You don't think it might just be the leads that need replacing?

Re: SE coil solutions
I have COP's and a PS1000 in my build however no boost. However to date no failed COP's. You could call Automotive Plus and discuss or maybe Nitrodann has a suggestion.
I keep a COP's tester with me know when at the track in case a miss needs to be resolved.

Re: SE coil solutions
CBR1000 coils with the Audi A4 igniter is the go. It will give you an easily wired and cheap seq spark and the coils fit nicely into the VVT valve cover with no need to bracket them down. The only down side is that you are bound to use Denso (or other removable top) plugs but this is no big deal, Denso plugs are great.

Re: SE coil solutions
Depending on timing, I have a set of brand new LS2 coils with bracket and Magnecor Competition leads from Flyin' Miata that I may part with:
I currently have Toyota coils, I want to try both of these back to back on the dyno and see if they do anything. The advantage of the LS2 coils is they work with the VVT/SE valve cover.
If the Toyota coils work just as well for my application then I'll offload the LS2 coils.
Cheers

My Fab9 COPs, DIY bracket, matching injectors and TWO ignition modules (Bryan sent me a different one but that didn't work either) are sitting in box, I couldn't get them to start the engine with the Adaptronic (yes, I did update the dwell time as recommended by Bryan from Fab9 and they do generate sparks).
Let me know if you want to try them, I'll send them to you for S&H cost to try, if they don't work just send them back otherwise we can negotiate a price (I trust you). These COPS are specific to the MSM/SE (the rocker cover plug holes are slightly narrower than stock NBs).
I've got the LS7 (aka D514A) GM coils at the moment which exhibit the same behaviour as the Fab9 kit, they do spark correctly but the engine wont start. I'm betting that it's the same issue - thinking of getting a pro to figure this one out.
Regarding Toyota coils: They're the "classic" replacement but don't they tend to burn out? No-one seems to have that problem with the GM coils.
Don't worry about dying, worry about not living!

Re: SE coil solutions
I've only heard of problems with eBay toyota coils. Had 3 sets of new ones from eBay die (in about 20k km) got a set of genuine toyota/denso Corolla coils from the wreckers no issues.

Thanks all.
Will report back on the solution(s) which work.

Re: SE coil solutions
Am I missing something?
What's wrong with replacing with factory ones?
My car is over 150,000 and going well
How do I know if cops are not doing their job?
Ps I just put in a new TPS as old one was breaking down at certain loads

Would this be neutral throttle and over-run?

Noticed it on mountain drives only.
No problem around town or at WOT.
But maintaining 100-120kph on uphill slopes - 0-3psi boost area - stuttering similar to a miss or breaking down of leads.
$285 from the stealership - installed myself, seems ok now.
Process of elimiantion test, done during NOTMEET, was to unplug the tps, and problem went away. But drank fuel like a demon and idled at 2k :-(

Re: SE coil solutions
Thanks for that MINX. If BARMY every displays those symptoms I'll know what to look for.
