NA6 fuel pump stopping half tank?

NA6 fuel pump stopping half tank?
My 93 NA6 used to fill up fine, the pump at the gas would stop/click when the tank was at full capacity. However recently, using 3 different stations, it stops around the 1/2 tank mark. Any ideas why and how to resolve it? There also seems to be a bit of a gas scent in the trunk?

Hold the nozzle in your right hand and take the hose to a vertical position with your left, the feed pipe in our little cars is short and can cause the fuel to foam.
