Do you just call up to book in for the epa test and have to wait a week or two?
Best of luck, sounds like you are super close :)

I called last Thursday and they got me in the following Wednesday.

So I got the car back from Ricol on Friday complete with a much leaner tune and now a tank full of E10. The 02 sensor was somehow out of calibration so that was also adjusted and I got him to bump up the idle a couple of hundreds revs until temp was reached. It feels pretty good now.

Its booked in 10.20 this Wednesday for round 2 of emissions. Pretty confident of passing this time. (famous last words)
I also found that the rather annoying clunk that I was sure was the exhaust clanging on the diff was actually just a few loose bolts securing the under car braces. Well actually every bolt was loose but some were very loose.

I was never really all that happy with the brakes on it either. They actually felt like sh*t compared to the SP but I thought it was just the way Hawk Blues felt as I never dríven with them before
So as I'm now self proclaimed mechanical retard……I mean genius, I thought I would have a look at them myself. Good thing I did.
No Hawk Blue's just some crappy glazed, uneven Bendix rubbish. That would explain it.
Good news is I have a spare new set of genuine Mazda pads as well as a set of Dave Moore's track pads that came with his SE calipers them. I put the Mazda one's on and gave them a quick bed in (Youtube tutorial) Now it stops like a decent car. Just doesn't go like one yet.
Now….. Where is the best/cheapest place to buy Hawk Blues for this bitch ??

Are you sure you want blues? They will destroy your rotors really fast if you drive the car on the road.

My apologies.

The blues are awesome and pads are FAR more expensive than rotors AND they are harder to replace.

Give the guys at brakes direct a call / email with your intended use.

I like the QFM stuff like the HPX or the A1RM. A1RMs are pretty dusty and noticeably "off" for that first slow stop or two, ie crawling up to the first intersections after leaving home under light brakes. Anything from a reasonable speed is ok straight away.

I had the HPS and didn't like them at all (had issues with them glazing) and were bloody hard to make a wheel lock, but i also had a vacuum leak in the booster. Performance didn't match cost for me, but others have had better results, so it's entirely possible my result was atypical. I might scruff them back and try again when the A1RMs are dead.

Blues are a great pad in almost all respects, they are just known for eating rotors if your brakes aren't hot. If all your doing with this car is driving it to the track, lapping and driving home and leaving scooby for road drives, Blues are great. If you intend to do reasonable amount of road km, personally id look at something else. You may be happy to keep the rotors up to the car for not having to worry about pads and changing them for track days.

Consider Winmax W3's. Zero00 is having a set fitted so can give some feedback. I run W3's on the rear and whilst they are a bit dusty (not as bad as A1RM's) they perform very well from cold and are not savage on rotors. On the front are W5's and I would not suggest them for a daily drive car as they need at least 100 degC to even start to work, dusty, can squeal on the road but a great track pad.

Sailaholic just to check, in your third paragraph did you mean to say HPX or HPS?

I had trouble with the Hawk HPS. Plohl ran the QFM HPX with good results in his Celica before it put a leg out of bed.

Blues also have super aggressive brake dust that will stain your rims.
They don't last at all daily driving on the street and eat the rotors in the process.
Super awesome at the track though.

Speaking from experience.

hawk Blues, as others have said will be hard on rotors, make noise and feel terrible when cold. When at operating temperature are very good.

Probably best to drop back to Hawk HP Plus or HPS, whatever they are calling the more street orientated compound now. I am more used to ordering the HT70 and 10 racing compounds

As for best place to buy Hawk pads, go to http://www.hawkpadsdirect.com I buy all my pads through them. Last lot I bought for my NA6, was 2 sets of front and rears with postage for the same price as local suppliers for one set. Only downside is the wait, can take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive. Pads for Wilwood dynalites are about $350 for a 3 sets with postage, so $100 a set of pads and $50 postage for up to to 3 or 4 sets depending on size.

Prices maybe out a little as the dollar has dropped since I last bought pads, but will still be near half price of local suppliers.
