Which data / track app do you use?
I've done two track days now and have another one next weekend. I use a go pro to record the lap but would like to overlay speeds and times etc.
I have an 01 NB so dont have OBDII.
My phone is an iPhone 5 and have a ram mount for it.
What do you recommend?

Re: Which data / track app do you use?
I was just about to ask the same question. Also Driving an NB I am using a GoPro Hero3+ and unfortunately using a Blackberry Z10 smart phone but do have access to an iPhone 4. I would also consider something that will gather some car data (obviously at a great expense). Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers.
Cheers.

Harry's Lap Timer for the iphone and
RaceChrono for Android. Two versions - free and Pro. Pro will overlay video with the GPS data and of course if you had OBDII you can have that overlaid as well.
RC was originally developed for Symbian, so if you have a spare old Nokia with Symbian, it will do just as well.

Can you overlay info with all the go pros? I can get the whi on flybuys but they do not have others unfortunately. been thinking of getting it for a while.

No idea about the go-pros but with RCP for Android, it will record the video at the same time, so it's a pretty simply package / solution for the casual (or not) trackday warrior.

I use a GoPro Hero3 Silver for video. For data, I pair a Qstarz 818xt bluetooth GPS with a Samsung Galaxy S3 mounted at the top of the windscreen running Racechrono. To overlay the data onto the video I use a program called RaceRender. I forgot to set the speedo limit higher so it stops at 160 in this one, but the end result looks like this:
Of 40-50 sessions recorded since I started using this stuff, one session showed lap times but no other data. The rest all recorded everything perfectly.

This is a combination of data from Vbox (video/GPS) http://www.vboxaustralia.com.au/Video%20VBox%20Lite.html and Innovate logging data using Dashware http://www.dashware.net/

I use Dashware to overlay my Performance Box data on GoPro videos.

I use the time sheet, hand out after the event. Much cheaper and it's all that counts!

Harry's Lap Timer for the iphone with kiwi wifi ODBII, but since i've changed ECUs I need a new solution.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Resurrecting an oldish thread.
Okibi, how did you find the GPS logging on the iphone with Harry's?
Iv heard all mobile phones are pretty ordinary with GPS accuracy, especially at high speeds, due to slow refresh rates?
I don't need 'to the millisecond' lap times but somewhat accurate would be nice.

Re: Which data / track app do you use?
If I could jump in here with a similar question - I have a GoPro Hero 3 Silver and a Nokia Lumia 1020.
My GoPro covers the video part.
Dashware is now available for free on their website so I have that to display stuff on my clips.
The problem is finding a RaceChrono or Harry's Lap Timer style program for my Nokia Lumia which runs Windows Phone 8.1. I have downloaded a program called Track Attack which records both video and GPS data at once but the GoPro obviously takes better video than the phone and track days is the whole reason I bought the GoPro. They have advised me in a future update they might include the option to export the GPS data but does anyone know any other apps to recommend ?

Re: Which data / track app do you use?
Sounds like you're pretty well out of luck there Buckshot, it seems there are only two lap timers that are any good for windows phone, track attack and tiny lap timer. Tiny lap timer doesn't seem to be able to export data for overlay in any format other than .kml, to be used for overlay onto google maps.
There are a couple of other ways. You could find a cheapish android phone and run Racechrono on it, although if it's too weak specs-wise it might drop data so you'll have intermittent spikes of recording/nonrecording, flickering track positions etc. Otherwise if you're willing to spend the money, there are dedicated lap timers/data loggers.
For any phone based data logging, you should be using an external GPS. No matter how good a phone is otherwise, unless it's able to update the GPS at 5hz or more, it won't be great for judging corner speeds and braking points etc. Most phones only update at 1hz, may be acceptable for semi-accurate lap times but not for speeds, corner G's etc. Pairing a Qstarz 818xt gps with a phone running Racechrono or Harry's is the cheapest way to get some good realtime data.

iPhones don't play well with external Bluetooth devices. My qstarz cannot be picked up by my iCrap 6.

It;s because you're trying to use a fashion statement as a tool.YanMa YatTai wrote:iPhones don't play well with external Bluetooth devices. My qstarz cannot be picked up by my iCrap 6.
I've used RaceChrono on both Android and Symbian with a Qstarz BT818 receiver. I actually prefer to use the old Symbian version at the track: simplicity, ease of use, reliability and phone battery performance. It sucks the life out of Androids.
