Have a Wankel or mod the 5 or...
Been thinking of getting an FD RX7. Would cost around $20K - $30K for a series 8. That's a lot of money. But I have lusted after one for a long time.
Or I can throw serious amounts of money at an MX5 and fix/mod it.
Or I could stretch and buy a new Toyota 86 GT. Or wait and see about the ND.
What would you do?

Road or track, or both? Road, 86. Track, modded MX5. Both, RX7.

FDs are one of the sexiest cars ever made - unfortunately they're money pits too

I have had multiple mx5 and multiple FD's. For track work go a 5. If you are a bogan street join boost whore go the FD. I am daily driving my FD it gets about 35 liters per hundred around town they can be worse.

Rotary Efficiency ...
No it just comes out the back in flames.
My old one used about 80+ Litres per 100 K's when I would track it.
Many TUNERS just use the fuel to cool the chook cooker down some to keep it alive.
For really short trips they are super inefficient on the highway @ 110 easy get about 10 L/100 k's

I have always appreciated the FD.
Microtech base map gives better economy than 35L per 100 and they are old design ecu's.
Saying that, NitroDann turbo 5 would be lighter, bloody fast and you could do it with smaller injectors, ie rx8 ones ;)
There will be many haters of rotaries on a piston based forum.
Personally I'd drive both, consider costs of mods and maintenance before making a decision. Can't wait to read which way you go. Best of luck

For the $30K you are looking at spending my choice would be a supercharged NC1 with suspension work. This would be fast and handle nicely. Nicer road car than NA/NB and still competent on the track if thats what you wanted to do.
And wouldn't be a continuing money pit like a 20yo rotary would.

For $30k I would look at a early Mopar, a 65 'Cuda with 273 V8, dirt cheap to go fast, and no matter what anyone says here, they can be made to handle extremely well at not a lot of cost. Just got to find somebody who understands torsion bar rear ends......
Or a 67 Mercury Cougar XR7, just like a mustang but 390ci goodness, better looking and cheaper than the equivalent mussy.

Re: Have a Wankel or mod the 5 or...
I'd personally go the 5, spend the difference in initial purchase cost on mods. But that's just because that's what works for me, your mileage may vary (with the RX-7, it definitely will
)
Depends if it'll spend more time in the garage, outside cafes on the weekend, at hard parker meets or on the track. After that, it's how much money you want to spend.
It's really all about what you want to do with it, there's no right or wrong answer here.
