Newbie introduction - Jimmynb

Postby Jimmynb » Fri Feb 27, 2015 1:28 pm

So i just bought an mx5,
I think it was a bargain. It had 160,000km, full service history, rego until may, and looks t have been treated really well.
I am the 3rd owner, bought it off a man in his 60's who sold it because he cannot drive it anymore due to a knee surgery.
Its a 99 nb (is that an nb8a?) manual, 5 speed, no badge. I am in sydney, so i am guessing i will get most of my stuff from Mx5 Mania (unless you guys know anywhere better)

It has 2 small holes in the roof, I am not willing to buy a new roof so can someone tell me the best budget alternative? At the moment it has been taped with cloth tape and left for hours, i only just finished doing that so i dont know how well it will go.

I need a roll bar, is mx5 mania the best place to buy it / have it installed. Because i need it asap.

Thanks for all the advice, nice to join the forum :) Can't wait to come to a meet.

Is there anything i should know about the forums?

I will upload photos soon

Welcome ...

There's a few roll bars out there - Brown Davis, Automotive Plus, AGI. Each have different positives/negatives.

Usual good advice often given on this forum is before spending, drive the car for a while and get a feel for it and what direction you want to go with it. Could save a lot of $ down the line ...

Welcome!

Why the rush on the roll bar? They aren't cheap no matter which you go with. If the car is to be a daily driver, I'd fix the roof first. However, you could install a roll bar yourself to keep costs down, though they can be a right royal pain to work around the soft top. There are plenty of how-to's on this forum and others.

Is it parked under cover?
If not you'll want to sort the roof.
If it's a daily then you'll also want to sort it. Leaks are the most annoying thing and I like to sort them immediately.

For the roof, Permatex does a vinyl/leather repair kit (around $30 at Supercheap). Never used it myself, but I've read decent reviews.

Or try a caravan/tent repair business if you have one close by ...

Thanks all for the advice, i cant upload the photos i have taken because they are too big so i will upload them on imgur and post the links.

I want a roll bar so quickly for safety purposes, i know the chance of me rolling is minimal, BUT, if i do i want to come out alive. or at least have a better chance.

And the roof isnt a huge problem, 1 of the holes is too small to leak, the other, tape works sortof right now, i just need some good way to patch them cheaply, i bought something of ebay but it hasnt arrived yet, and i have seen/will consider the permatex vlp.

Welcome & congrats!
Yes, it's an NB8A, which spanned 1998 to late 2000.
Marine specialists can also help with the soft-top:

Also see Droo's post for his fix at the bottom of the above link.

It looks great Jimmy and has some nice touches, vent rings, clear lenses on side indicators and the chrome fuel cap. The wheel centres are yellowing, Powerplus have a range of touch up paint for wheels.
Greg.
When you turn your car on, does it return the favour?

The link in between the img tags should read: http://imgur.com/GQejB4G.jpg?1

Your original links ended at the end of the Id without the .jpg. On the Imgur page for each photo there's quick embed links you can copy/paste into forums too!

Its a solid looking car, nice one. :)
