Cyclone Marcia is coming to get you Rocky. Put the roof up on your 'SP'.

Rocky the man might not have comms at the moment. Marcia is looking particularly unattractive and seems to be heading directly for Rocky the town.

Best wishes Rocky! Hopefully the electricity comes back soon so you can power your hair dryer.

Hi Guys! (Get stuffed Bruce)
Yep, been out of action as the power and water has been down since midday Friday.
Got the water back today but still no power over most of the city.
Only typing this because we are spending the night at my son's office in the city centre (which has power) as we couldn't hack another 35 degree night. The temp and humidity has been pretty nasty.
No damage at home as I live in the foothills of the mountains which provided a fair bit of protection. Splintered & uprooted trees everywhere and 1800 power lines knocked down. Very large amount of water dropped on the area and so some damage from that in many places.
I have spent most of the last four days sourcing water and ice (to try to keep food in good condition). Thousands of generators have been sold since the cyclone and when things settle down I will be putting a big one in as I do not want to go through this again in my 'old age'. Even if your house isn't damaged, you can be sure you will lose power & probably water for an extended period.
Given that it went across us as a Category 4 the damage is relatively minor and the theory is that the mountains took the edge off it and dissipated the 'eye' somewhat. There was a lot of water dumped on the area and a lot of damage is due to this with creeks pushing debris through buildings and roads.
I was part of the disaster relief team in the Innisfail area after Cyclone Larry in 2006 and I am pleased to say that Cyclone Marcia was nothing like as destructive as that one. We were lucky.
I had an emergency plan for the "famous fake SP" that involved lots of matresses and me spread-eagled across her to hold them on, down in the bowles of the garage. The 'hairdryer' is safe PB.

Very glad to see you're OK. When will we have underground power in the cyclone zones?
Take care Rocky and don't pick up any bugs from the dodgy water around the place.

Rocky, good to hear that you guys avoided any injury or damage, but as you say the inconvenience of no power & water is no small issue.

it looks like a bit of a nightmare to me but they obviously breed them tough in the far north.

Hi Guys, into the 5th day without power, but it is great to have water. It was wearing thin bringing 30litre jerrycans of water from the southside of town home and then filling the cisterns on the toilets repeatedly.
Bought more ice today and we are gradually whittling down the foodstock, eating most but dumping some.
Into a shopping centre for a coffee, not as good as mine but better than nothing.
Guy nextdoor bought a new 5.5kva generator and offered a powercord to my downstairs fridge. Great but unfortunately he only runs it at home for 4 hours in the evening each day as he takes it in to his business during the day. Bit of a help though. (his neighbour abused him for running the generator after 8.00pm so he switches it off at 8.30 - I'd have suggested the neighbour buy ear plugs)
Wife has been advised to attend work tomorrow even though the school doesn't have power. Should be interesting in terms of Duty of Care & OH&S. There are some dropkicks running big organisations.
Should have power back by Friday - yippee! Typing this on the iPad sitting in the dark.

Bruce - what don't you like about Cyclones, soggy boots and mildew?

The fact that nothing dries and your washing stays wet for days.
I thought you might not have a flushing toilet.
It's paradise here in Melbourne. You do occasionally get '4 seasons in 1 day', but it is still lovely.
