Quite like the FD RX7s, and have contemplated buying one in the past, but a 20year old, twin turbo rotary is probably not the best basis for a reliable and cost effective weekend track car.

And here I was prepping my flame suit :)

Finding a good one wouldn't be easy but surely there are 'some' out there already converted to single turbo with other decent mods. Anyways a no is a no, so I will move on :)

Can you legally turbo a 2.5 engine in a NC, as that would be my preference if spending up big? (And if I liked NCs)

Was considering it mate.

The NA certainly has an advantage in that's it's the lightest of the range but when it comes to 2F and 2B regs it has it's limitations. I did consider building an all out 'time attack' turboed NA, but it really wouldn't be eligible for a lot.

Paul,

What abut something with a Nissan badge??

Depending on where you want to play, S13's can be had for cheap, just hard to find one that hasn't been molested.

S14's can range from very cheap to drug money, but finding a good one as a base you would get one with plenty of change out of $5k if you look hard enough.

For both cars, there is plenty of bolt on go fast bits for under the bonnet and under the chassis that are cheap and make them pretty quick.

Callum Whatmore's S13 is a very basic and simple car and it goes like stink, just not a car that is approved for Prodsports, but the 14's are.

If the budget is there and it must be a 2 seater, 350Z's are coming down in price, plenty to be had for less than $15k and they can be made to go pretty quick as well with plenty of weight to be removed if you want to look at 2B, or even 2F. And the same would go for an S15 silvia if 2 seats only is not a deal breaker.

An S14 to 2f spec could be put on the track for under $15k all up if you don't worry too much about changing computers or getting a motor built.

Don't have anything against Nissans Matt, but i'm really looking for that "pure" sports car experience for my weekend car.

In saying that, i would love to see more 350Zs, Toyota 86s and Elises etc in 2F guise.

It might still be worth having a look at a 350Z then Paul, the early ones are reminiscent of the original S30 240Z but with the modern mechanicals.

I've decided I'll probably doing something very similar to Brian Goodwin's " Extreme Street Toy".

Essentially an NC with 2.5l engine conversion, full exhaust, intake, cams and reflashed ecu. Upgraded LSD, clutch, radiator, brakes, Ohlins coilovers & swaybars. Lightweight wheels, R Specs, lighter battery, ADR approved race seats, harness, roll over hoop and Carbon fibre roof.

Goal would be abut 140 rwkw and plenty of torque. Hopefully get it down to about 1100kgs.

I'll be honest, Red won't be my preferred choice :)

It'll be built in line with the CAMS 2B regs, so that if I get to the point where I want to turn it into a dedicated race car, it'll just be a matter of stripping it out, replacing the rollover hoop with a full cage and tweaking from there.

I'm hoping my good mate Chris will cut me a deal on a bulk buy if I proceed  , but yeah I'm guessing about 35K including purchase of the car.

If I wasn't going to do a road registered car, then you could do it for under 30K, and to be honest that's what a good 2F NA or NB would cost to build from scratch with new parts.

I might be able to save a few bucks if some second hand parts come up for sale.

Hard to tell, but I'd hope to get close to the times of the 2F MX5 race cars:

QR Clubman: 1:02
QR National: 1:25
Lakeside: 1:00
Wakefield: 1:11
