Re: Budget NA6 supercharge build
on the weekend I installed a better silicon hose to the idle control valve and then redid the timing to 6 degrees and increased the fuel pressure to 70 psi
It idles well, however under load at low rpm it feels like it is quite retarded and at half to 3/4 I'm getting pinging.
http://youtu.be/OWaut6nbVdY
I think it must be the heat causing the detonation ??
Might up the fuel pressure some more, definitely don't think I can back the timing off much more

Jaycar sell a module that you could piggy back to your OEM ecu. Specifically for timing only. (They also have a fuel control unit) think it's like $85 but don't quote me on that.

Yep, that's it.
Believe you need to keep the AFM due to the air temp sensor but maybe you could use an aftermarket sensor and ditch the AFM. Either way guess it works off voltage but I'm not a cluey tech guy so not too sure.

Enjoyed that- thanks mate. When getting your fuel and timing tuned, try not to drive it too hard!
I found it hard to tell if there was detonation. Maybe a cabin vid.. but frankly it's guess work
To me, i saw a fair amount of unburnt fuel out the exhaust.. I think you might be too retarded (boom!).. pull the plugs.. is there's a sh*t load of black, you're too retarded or overfueled and unburnt fuel is entering your exhaust. But look for signs of det on the plugs. Overfueling kills CATs, so go careful. obviously run 98.
It would be really really good if you got a wideband O2.. as it's impossible to know if you're rich or lean under boost.
What PSI are you hitting? Intercooled? When i ran a crossover, I saw 100 deg c intake temp.. which looking back i almost can't believe!
It's hard to hear Det.. so i don't think you can risk going by ear for high rpm/high boost (most risky territory).
btw- good to not really hear belt slip.

Re: Budget NA6 supercharge build
I did watch the vid but also thought maybe a cabin vid would be more usable for diagnosis purposes.
When I posted earlier today, I was on a smoko break and didn't have time to, we'll make sense. If ever I do that its just so I give a response as opposed to none. If ever I can help, I will
100 degrees is pretty normal non intercooled. Believe gslender also had similar temps before he fitted a water to air cooler.
When I added up the prices of both jaycar modules and the controller and whatever else I needed it came to like 350. At that point it just made more sense for me to go with the MS2.
I imagine that you are at the point where you would spend 350 just to have the issue sorted but then you'd have to work out how to tune it on the hand controller.
Last ECU that I self tuned was a microtech lt10s in my rx7 but that was probably 10 years ago now.
New ecu's offer so much more and are more efficient to tune (once I know what I'm doing!)
If your timing is too retarded down low as Paul suspects, upping it will only make it too advanced in the higher revs/boost.
Wonder if a tuner would work on a jaycar unit or maybe you could hire a dyno for a couple of hours and use their wideband?
You are getting there Wade. Hopefully a reasonable solution presents itself soon.

Re: Budget NA6 supercharge build
Thanks for the responses guys.
Paulus I was trying to be careful with the throttle as I was concerned about the tune, but maybe I pushed too hard anyway. I'll try to get some onboard footage.
I also think it's too retarded at low revs but it is pinging at higher revs so is probably too advanced up high..... Problematic without some way of adjusting timing on the fly
It's definitely bloody hot, the higher boost pulley isn't helping. It probably does need to be intercooled...... Just wish I could weld so I didn't have to bolt it together with silicone joiners.
I was going to go the MS2 route as well, but initially wanted to see if I could get it running ok with out it, however given the cost of all the parts I will probably just get a diypnp ms2 and build it myself.
Unbelievably, a mate of mine (non-mechanic) has just bought a dyno, he put it on a truck in Tassie yesterday and it should be up here in about a week or so, therefore I will be able to play with the tune in a safer manner than road testing. Will look at getting an MS2 soon.

Re: Budget NA6 supercharge build
Thanks for the feedback guys
I've tried to be careful when testing, wasn't at WOT
I agree that it is probably too retarded at low revs and is too advanced at higher revs. Which is problematic without an ability to adjust timing on the fly
I was going to get a MS anyway, but I wanted to see if I could get the car running safely without it, however I think I'm going to struggle with just the stock ecu and the RRFPR......pity
I'm also getting a heap of heat.... Probably really needs to be intercooled :-S , be shedloads easier if I could weld.....
The Jcar solution would probably work, but like you say, it's hard to justify the cost when you can get a Ms2 diypnp for a hundred bucks more.
This would also save me having to learn how to use two different interfaces
Coincidentally a mate (non-mechanic) has just bought a Dyno for his "home" workshop so I should be able to have a bit of a go at tuning it.
Probably put the solid engine mounts in on the weekend, and I'll try to get some in car footage.

Re: Budget NA6 supercharge build
haha- he's also Sydney!
if you're running a reduction pulley, crossover and live in Sydney (hot), you're guna have to be super careful. I saw 100 degrees in (original UK) Wales with crossover on the highway. Keep an eye on coolant too
IC is a pain, but worth it... it will also quieten down the charger a bit. only down side is a small throttle response loss. it is a shock how much compressors heat the air, it tells you how inefficient they are.
