Thanks guys, I'm pretty pumped to get them
Yeh, I wish I could get 9" wheels but unfortunately my class in supersprints (2B) has a rule that you can only go wider by 1" on the wheels so 8" is the maxApu wrote:They'll look even meaner if 9"!

Re: Dan's NC track toy
Another MX5 Club day down, a great day as always with no lack of sunshine around!
Managed a new PB of 1:11.48 on the club's timing and 1:11.633 on my Aim Datalogger which I'm pretty happy with but there's still a lot of improvement to be made in my driving.
Only niggle with the car is an issue with the radiator overflow leaking if the car is turned off when it's hot so I think I'm up for a new radiator overflow tank since from talking to Phil and Peter they said the same thing happened to them.
Made a video of a 1:11.968 lap followed by my pb lap of 1:11.633 using the data from my Aim Datalogger as an overlay, I went a bit hard on the first lap at the fishhook but I think I kept it together ok.

Well done Dan. Looks like you're in 3rd for turn 10 and fish hook. Suggest you try it in 2nd. You're down at 65km/hr for them and it's a bit slow for 3rd.

There was a bit of talk earlier in this thread about which gear to use for those two corners with a 3.7 and 4.1 (I've got the 4.1 now), I tried both 2nd and 3rd but found I was upsetting the car just before the entry to those corners using 2nd so I went back to using 3rd since I felt like the later braking and less shifting I can do using 3rd was worth it to me since I'm still staying above 3500rpm and the car is not as tail happy getting back on the power since it has less torque at the lower revs.
I have got a lot more seat time in the car now so I'll revisit it next time I'm out, it seems possible since with the 4.1 5000rpm = 65kmh in 2nd gear with my current wheels/tyres.

Re: Dan's NC track toy
Spent some time last night getting my Aim data integrated with racerender and got the throttle trace working, unfortunately I can't seem to get brake data or steering data out of the OBDII but I think what I've got is enough to make the video useful to review laps to find out things to improve on.
I was looking at getting the Aim Smartycam but after getting the integration working and seeing I can cut and render a video in 10 mins I'm thinking I'll buy one of the new Sony Action Cams they showed at CES since one of those are <$400 and the Racerender software is $49.
Here's the new version with Throttle position:

Great times Dan!
Yes with the 4.1 I'm using third in the fish hook and T10, but then I've go a bit more torque than you and I limit it to 6,500 in these corners before changing, 6,000 every where else. I find if I select 2nd I need to feather the throttle otherwise it spins the inside wheel. So much for the Mazda LSD.

Re: Dan's NC track toy
I've dríven a few modified NCs around Wakefield but after I used my stock NC2 on Sunday I can now appreciate better why you guys are swapping to 4.1 difs. Third gear is so very tall! I found my car was struggling to pull out of turn 2 and I wasn't using 4th on the back straight into turn 10. Although the extra legs in the NC2 rev range was also a factor with the latter. Of course with only stock power I had no traction issues with 2nd gear in the fish hook and turn 10.

Re: Dan's NC track toy
Had a good day out yesterday at my first Supersprint which was over at the Sydney Motorsport Park GP Circuit.
The club did a great job of getting people organised in garages, it was good catching up with everyone and as always getting some invaluable track wisdom from Luke and Phil!
I’ve been out to the circuit a few times before but it was my first time in the MX5 while it was dry (I went in January to a practice day but it was pouring!), the car felt great out there as usual with no mechanical gremlins to speak of
Unfortunately it looks like the new timing system they used to replaced the dorians screwed up for me, the fastest time on Natsoft and in the results was a 1.54.423 but the fastest time I had on my AIM datalogger was a 1:53.75. I went and looked into it and it appears that it missed me going past the start/finish line and recorded a 3:48.5366 on my fastest lap. As can be seen on the video I uploaded I did a 1:54.97 followed by a 1:53.75 which equals 3:48.72 which is within .18 of the combined laps on Natsoft. I’m not racing for sheep stations and I’m sure I’ll improve the time next time but still a little bit annoying.
My fastest lap was my last for the day and for my first time in the car on the circuit I’m happy with the time but I’ve definitely still got a lot of improving to do since my T1 speed is only around 160’ish after slowing down from 180 also from looking at Charlie Browns speeds there are other area’s like the back straight between T5-T6 where I am about 15km off the pace and on the complex before the back straight I think I have some line issues to correct.
My theoretical best was a 1:50.196 so there is probably still pace in consistancy and I should go check the data/video for those laps to see what I was doing differently, also some wider rubber probably wouldn’t go astray so I’m looking forward to getting those wheels I ordered to get off the stock wheels.
Here’s the video of my ‘3:48.5366’:

Re: Dan's NC track toy
I’ve picked up a couple of goodies in the last fortnight, I got a Cobra Imola seat second hand off the forum to use as a passenger seat and I picked up my new wheels today from Autotechnik. The wait was bang on 10 weeks but I think it was worth it since I got the +49 offset I wanted.
I’m picking up some new Z221’s on Wednesday so I can try the new size wheels out on the weekend at the Circuit Club day at SMSP GP but am torn between getting 225/45 and 235/45. I’m leaning towards 235 since I figure it’s probably better to have more rubber than less but I’m not 100% decided yet..
Pretty excited to get these wheels on to see how they look, I'm going to get a bit more aggressive with the lowering and alignment too since at the moment it's pretty tame.

if you go for the 235's you will need 40 profile, unless you want lots of tyre/guard rubbing
Cant wait to see them installed!

Are you sure?
I just punched the numbers into this calculator (http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp) and it's saying 235/45-17 on a 17x8 +49 which I have is the same fender clearance as 225/40-17 on a 17x8 +45 which I don't think is very wild since guys run bigger tyres than that on 17x9 +45 with RPF1's.
I also found a post from Keith from Flyin' Miata who said he's run 235/45-17 on 17x9 +50 and it clears without a roll (http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=545790).
I looked this up before I brought these and specifically went out and found +49 wheels so I'd have the option of 235/45 if I wanted it since A050's and Z221's only come in 45 heights in 17's
