Speaker sizes - NB8B

Postby The Green Goblin » Mon Jan 26, 2015 3:34 pm

Gents,

i am thinking about replacing the standard speakers located in the doors (both main speaker + tweeters at the top). can anyone advise the size of both items - even better, recommend direct replacements that are of good quality?

also anything to look out for when installing/removing. i assume its just a matter of soldiering connecting wires & bolting in position the new items?

cheers,
jas.

Stock size of the woofer is 5x7" but they are mounted into a plastic holder that fits into an 8" round hole in the door. So you can fit pretty much anything in there up to 8". There's heaps of depth too. The tweeters just feed off the woofer and use a capacitor as the crossover. The tweeters attach to the door cards and are about 1". Best take the door card off and have a look to see what's there before you make a purchase on new stuff.

I use a pair of 8" woofers but most people go for 6 or 6.5" as there is a far bigger range to choose from and they are a bit more responsive. 8" and 5x7 screw straight into the existing holes, even using the original mounting screw holes, the smaller round speakers require a bit of fabrication.

If you go to page 8 of my build thread I've got a writeup of me replacing my speakers that may help you. Link is in my sig. The photos have all been screwed up size wise thanks to imageshack but they are still there.

I took out my stereo and speakers - the sound of the motor is enough music for my ears.

5 x 7 is the standard size, which is a funny size to me :P

I replaced mine recently with Alpine Type R 6.5 inch splits which have their own crossover.

Speakers came with adapters the installation was a breeze. Removed the original tweeters & was able to use the stock mounting brackets for the new ones - Bit of quick grip to secure & all is perfect.

Happy with the quality of the speakers, but would suggest you could get something event better... Only negative I've noticed is getting what I call head unit distortion... So I'm looking at installing an amp to run the speakers along with a monoblock to run a sub.

to be honest im not really fussed with the sound system.. as long as i can hear it okay (i.e. step up from factory) & i can use my iphone/ipod on the stereo eventually thats all i want..

the car isnt dríven too much on street.. more so track/fun car, so its not priority. the only reason why i done it was because i had the door cards off.
