Hi All,
Doing my diff swap the other night i noticed the uni-joint in the tailshaft is pretty rough. 949 say the factory unit isn't serviceable.
How has anyone gone with getting a replacement locally or just get getting the local tailshaft shop to cut and shut a new uni on?
Cheers

Re: Tailshaft uni replacement
Not sure about replacements but a tail shaft place would easily make one up, if replacements not available.

Re: Tailshaft uni replacement
Got one budget estimate back. $600! To cut and shut new unis on the existing shaft (no remove and refit)
Said they would have to see it to provide a proper price.
They also mentioned that having them a bit notchy is normal. Given that mine still moves and I was just doubting it from a prevention / vibration point I think it might stay that way for a while if I don't find a significantly cheaper option.
Will try calling some more places.

Easy to replace later if you ever feel the desire to, or it gets worse...... so run with what you got for the moment.

Re: Tailshaft uni replacement
I had one made up,completely new about 5 years ago and it cost $500 so that is not a bad price but mine was in and out and whole new shaft.
Mine has Holden commodore replaceable uni's so will be a cheap fix next time!
Some people I talked to at the time said binding is quite common because the design has the uni's running in such a way that they wear and bind.have no idea if that is true but just passing on my experience. Gibson's at Newcastle have done a few and mine was done by PDR in South Geelong, and I could probably get hold of any MX model to use as a mule for them to make one for you if you are interested.
Good luck with whatever you do,
Peter.

Re: Tailshaft uni replacement
600 seems way too much.
Agree with Beavis.
If ever you do decide to replace, send me a pm and I'll get a quote from an old mate who does this stuff all day every day. They built me a 600hp tail shaft for my rx7 and rather than cut and shut, all is new.

Forgot to add that at that time a replacement from my friendly Mazda dealer was $940.Recent experience would say that they probably wouldn't have one in Aus and it would be even more expensive.

Re: Tailshaft uni replacement
Yeah I was expecting around 150 for a cut and shut. At $600 I am strongly inclined to just ignore it until it gets worse.
As beavis said it's an easy job to do anytime.
Brand news ones are 270 in the USA but exchange and shipping make it pretty close to 500 landed.
