Go-Pro mounts 2015 requirements

I know there have been a few threads on mounting video cameras, but does anyone have a definitive answer as to what is required for 2015 NSW MX5 trackdays and supersprints as requiements seem to change over time.

I have a basic Go_Pro to go into the NB8A with a Brown-Davis ROPS.

Advice on what will be acceptable to scrutineers and good place to buy same appreciated.

I have a camzilla one, they advertise it as CAMS compliant and I had no troubles at the last club track day when I used it with one of their secondary tethers on my Brown Davis ROPS on my NC. The guy from camzilla is really helpful answering questions and has different options on mounting gopro's.

If you really wanted to you could probably piece together the parts yourself since I'm pretty sure most of it are off the shelf Ram parts but im not sure if you'd save much http://www.rammount.com

The below is applicable to CAMS requirements at National / International level events. Best to check with the MX-5 club if you want to be 100% sure you're meeting their requirements as they may be different.

Mounts like the ones linked above which rigidly mount to the roll cage are fine and don't technically need secondary restraints (but it doesn't hurt and club days seem to be the favoured home of overzealous officials so if you're leaving it in the car might as well put one on)

If you're using a suction mount or adhesives it must have a secondary restraint (a cable tie around the camera and a solid part of the car is fine)

No helmet mounted cameras at CAMS events under any circumstance (the only way you can get around it is by mounting the camera to air ducting that some of the V8 & GT guys use).

If you're mounting the camera outside the car it has to be within 100mm of the vehicles's bodywork.

I know this mightn’t help you but it may help other NC owners.

I mounted my GoPro between the roll bar hoops where the wind blocker sits. To do this, just grab the blocker and reef it upwards and it unclips. Place the double sided tape mount on the flat surface and position it so that the wind blocker can be clicked back into place when not using the GoPro.

I then drilled two countersunk holes into the mount and fitted screws through the mount into the plastic bodywork. You need to countersink the holes so the GoPro case clears the screws when you click it into place. Then I use a short length of speaker wire to act as an additional restraint should both the tape and screws fail.

This has passed all scrutineering (including Peter Battison!!!) for the last few years both at Club days and Supersprints.

There are reasons why cars are scrutineered before going out on track......

In a high-speed impact objects can become projectiles, and even relatively light objects acquire significant kinetic energy, with that energy proportional to the square of the speed. I wouldn't want to be hit by a GoPro bouncing around at 160+ kmh inside a just crashed car.

Avoiding scrutineering of a camera is possible, but not forever, and when discovered it will not be taken well.

Everyone using such in-car devices should secure them well, and add a tether, for their own sake, and for that of the track/ambo crews that might have to otherwise deal with the consequences.

Up north, at various track days a variety of cameras have come off plenty of cars and smashed windscreens, dented panels and punctured tyres, so they can do affair bit of damage.

And if in an open car can do some serious damage to you if it gets into the cabin

Just no arguing this point. Loose objects in the cabin on track, absolutely no no.

Go pro coming loose mid corner is going to be pretty distracting which could in itself cause a mishap.

GoPro have various mounts including one for bars. I use this when gliding. They can be picked up where ever GoPro are sold such as JB Highfi.

I use the roll bar mount on the shock tower brace, rock solid provided you've done it up hard enough (ie screwdriver)

Got this setup from Camzilla today with the long arm. Really helpful guys at the store and reasonable price with lots of options.
