Gear knob weight

What is the benefit of a weighted gear knob? Is it better than the standard fitted one?

i have a delrin one in the race car, probable weighs less than a stock one... lighter is always better.

this has come up before...i was curious so i made a gear knob out of tungsten(heavy metal)
it feels crap to use to use, but makes a good novelty item.it so heavy for its size.
i wonder if it would help with a box that was a bit hard on some changes?

Handy when you put in a shorter throw shifter which requires 30% more force to change (guesstimate) having that weight behind it makes it feel like stock again.

There is a previous thread where the weight of OEM knobs were discussed. My NA8 came with the standard Nardi Knob, which is lighter than the NA6 knob. I went to a Mazda wrecker and found a much heavier knob......smoothed out the gear changes no end.


Some MX-5/Miata aftermarket knobs have been designed to be a specific weight and have been reported as improving the shift feel.

I have the MR SSK for my 6-speed and with the stock knob it took decent effort to shift, my girlfriend needed to use two hands to pull it into reverse. I got a Blox Type-R knob, I think they weigh 440g, and it makes the shift much easier. Like cookie said, the heavy weight makes the effort feel more stock like (doesn't effect the glorious shift change the SSK makes though).

Well my SE has under 45000k and its beautiful to drive gear select is so sweet so Im thinking if you need 2 hands to change gear will a knob help

To clarify, with the stock gear stick the movement was not difficult at all, and I wouldn't have put an aftermarket knob on for anything other than aesthetic reasons. However, with the SSK the movement becomes harder due to the change in pivot position, and the extra weight compensates for this.

I used to think the stock SE shift was nice, how good could the MR SSK make it? But I did it anyway based on positive reviews from others, and let me just say the SSK can make it much much better. The movement goes from being like a leaver to being like a switch. The SSK also replaces the selector bushing and rubber boots which can get quite worn, if your car has only done 45k km, then they may still be in quite good nick. I recommend you try out the SSK if someone near you has it fitted though, you'll notice the difference.

Im in the process of purchasing a LE with 20000K and it drives like new .The gear shift is also sweet as the SE so with out playing with you knob I persume from a great didtance the selectors/linkages must be below par or am I a IDIOT

Had a quick flick through that thread and come to the conclusion the heaver it is the betters it is the lighter
it is the better it is Colour is important the more you pay makes a difference bla bla
