MX5 NA8 no spark issues

Postby ledgehammer » Wed Jan 14, 2015 9:36 am

Hello all,

This is my second post but I'm getting quite frustrated at my favourite thing in the whole world!

So I had to get my MX5 NA8 towed because it wasn't turning on. I called Allianz roadside assist and he said it was either the coil pack or crank angle sensor as there was no spark. So I went to Japan. Well this was a holiday and i thought i would fix the issues when I get back.

Im back and I called up MX5 Mania and they sold me a coil pack. It was a good price and that didn't fix the issue. I will keep that part as they are really hard to get at a good price. I called them back and they told me its probably the CAS. So today I will take my CAS to them and they will put a new chip into it.

Anyone else have any advice what what could be wrong? I have checked the ECU for common things like rust, and frankly it looks like its in very good condition, no rust, no evidence of water damage whatsoever.

At this stage i just want my pride and joy back on the road for the rest of summer!! :NA8:

It may sound silly, but did you check the simple things like plugs and leads as you have not mentioned them

Hello,

The leads could be the issue, however the spark plugs look find, no corrosion. But there isn't a spark from any leads at all. Unless all the leads are gone? Plus the spark plugs aren't wet either.

So could be it be;

1/ the ECU is busted?
2/ The wiring loom is busted
3/ The EFI relay is bad?
4/ The CAS is bad?

3, 4 Will be cleared today. Just waiting on a call from MX5 Mania to confirm they have a part read for use.

Also on a possibly un-related note, the breaks seem to be locked on for maybe the first 5 minutes or so driving. Then it seems be all okay. Maybe its the break lines or the breaks themselves? I haven't really taken the wheels off to have a look yet.

No wet plugs means no fuel being injected. The CAS controls the firing of the injectors. Buy a noid light and check the CAS.

I went to see MX5 Mania today and they put a new chip in the CAS and also gave me a good deal on an EFI main relay. So hopefully it will be resolved by this afternoon... Fingers crossed

I did not know you could chip a CAS, I just keep an OEM spare.

Apparently you can, so that makes life easier? I had a good chat with the blokes and Mania and they said OEM for the whole module is 500+ so i guess if this works its a cost effective solution.

Just a quick update, after getting the CAS back on (and properly aligning the dogs ears... which was a PAIN) I turned the key to ignition, the radio came on, so i turned it off. I hesitantly turned the key... slowly... slowly.... slowly and BAM it worked! Yay!

:NA8:

I then proceeded to put on the new steering wheel I got from Up Garage when I was in Japan a few weeks ago and it works better than ever.

Still the breaks are making some strange sounds, but I'm pretty sure the pads are worn away.

Glad you're sorted. Just so you know, the things that stop your car are called brakes. Break is to be used for something that is broken ;)

There was a recent thread on rear brake pads sticking.

Hahaha Oops! My bad.

Also after driving it for a while i got home and there was a big water leak.... Im not sure how that happened. Does the viscosity of the oil have any impact? Im using 5w30 which is a bit thin for the hot weather in Sydney.

Plus I will search for the breaks sticking and I will post an update on what my solution is.
