Car won't start, need help please!

Postby langlsha0 » Fri Jan 02, 2015 4:32 pm

As title says my poor Miata won't start, it's a 1996 Mazda Miata 1.8L DOHC mods: Magnaflow full exhaust, aftermarket header, solid Derlin motor mounts, Koni yellow coil overs.
So the issue I'm having is I purchased it with a bad miss at idle and bad motor mounts, I ran seafoam system cleaner through the intake system, and did a tune up NGK plugs and wires, still a bad miss at idle. So code it through was egr orifice tube clogged or something. When temperatures outside are above 30-40 degrees car runs fine and has barely a miss or no miss, and when you get the rpm's above 1500-2200 it's fine and has plenty of power. So recently a very cold morning went to start it up and would start for anything usually I give it has a few times it will start this time nothing helped. So I came home later pulled plugs cleaned them and cleaned egr valve and with a lot of effort and no improvement from cleaning it starter and barely ran drove half a block and it died at idle. So I removed EGR valve and blacked it off with a piece of cardboard and capped all vacuum lines and it will run with no power like absolute sh*t and dies when I try to let it idle. I have also noticed my fuel pump doesn't prime when I cycle the key it randomly does but not always but yet the car will still start? I'm stumped and caught between EGR valve and fuel pump I don't wanna guess since egr $100 and fuel pump $132.

Left hand drive + Miata + Cold weather (winter) probably means somewhere in the US......

Ah, didn't look that hard. Figured the image could have been an old one just to show what the car was. But didn't notice the LHD.

Get onto the big website. We do not experience the same conditions as you.

Okay so here's a update, I appreciate everyone's input and have now fixed it. So it was throwing the code EGR orifice tube restricted or something and I was getting a no start issue. So I replaced EGR valve after cleaning it didn't work I also removed the EGR pipe that runs to my aftermarket header and I cleaned it out. I then replaced pcv valve that i conveniently broke and removed spark plugs cleaned them and checked the gap and reinstalled. Car started right up and ran great and idles at 1k rpm the other issue might be previous owner put 89 octane or something it was mid grade and it calls for unleaded only so once I ran the car to almost E I filled it with regular unleaded. Purrs like a kitten still a little bit of a lag on throttle response but it's running again.
