An NB8A with 8psi and a T28 I used for a while was way more grunty than my SE with 13psi on the OEM IHI turbo. Pretty sure it follows that any 1.8 MX5 with a 2560 and, say, 12psi would be better again. All assuming injectors, fueling, tune, driveline etc are also sorted.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

To the point about getting a regular NB and turbo charging it - mine does a touch over 150rwkw on 7psi with a TD04. Power curve is pretty much a straight line.

But buying an SE gets you much more than an NB with a turbo'd engine.

SEs are great, if you treat them like a non-turbo car that you want to turbo.
Everything needs replacing from scratch, as the factory turbo system is just rubbish.

They aren't like silvias with nistune chips, ours need a standalone to run them after some mods.

The SE has loads of other great features over a standard NB, some aesthetic and some handling/performance.

I wish Snowie was an SE. It would save me a pantload of money and hassles getting it legal.
If I didn't want a friggin white car I would have gone SE for sure and just given the whole thing to Dann. No engineers, no emissions, no blue slip, just transfer the rego and your away.
I wouldn't have had to buy a SE 6 speed and diff. The other stuff is neither here or there.
You would dump the suspension, intercooler, intake, turbo and get an ECU anyway.
So that's the same cost for SE or non turbo.

I had an NB and parts of an AVO kit, and I even had an SE lip/rear skirt/seats. It would have been a lot quicker to have turboed the Red NB and it would have made more power but I wanted a black SE ever since Mazda decided sell black ones in Australia. :mrgreen:
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
