Suitability of 215/45 17 tyres on 7" rims for track?

Postby Jitag » Sat Dec 27, 2014 5:12 pm

I'm currently running 205/45 17 tyres on my NC, which has the 7" BBS rims. I do a few track sprint days per year, and am looking to upgrade from the current Dunlop Direzzas to Yokohama Advan Nuevos within the next few months. I'm thinking of fitting 215/45 17" tyres, but most NCs I've seen with the 215s have 8" rims and I'm a bit nervous about rolling the 215s off the rims on the track. Can anybody give me some advice on suitability, or point me to some authoritative articles. Thanks, Jitag.

215/45/17 is the standard sizing for 17x7 rims on many OEM cars.

Ford focus, Mondeo, probably a lot of Mazda 6 etc.

basically, it's fine.

You won't roll the tyres off running 215s on the 7s but 8's are definitely the better option.

I'd stick with the 205s on your 7s. You won't really see any gains going to a 215 on the 7s.

I've run 3 different models of 215/45/17 tyres on my NC's stock wheels with no issues on 10+ track days, the models I've tried are Bridgestone RE001, Nitto NT01 and Hankook Z221.

Absolutely no problems with any of them.

Yokohama say the size is fine too if that helps http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires_101/c ... eel_width/

I've been running 215/45 tyres on stock wheels in track events for the last 7 years without a hint of a problem.

A 215 on a 7" sounds like a lot of Tyre.

Isn't that like a 8 1/2" Tyre on a 7" rim?

Most cars I've had with a 7" rim, Renault Sport Clios etc use a 195.
I am not saying a 215 is wrong I just must be missing something with the measurements.

I run a 205 on a 8".

215/45 on the stock 17x7 wheels is fine and isn't too big, on an 8.5" rim that would be stretched (my evo came stock with 245/40/18 on an 8.5" wheel)

On a 17x8 wheel 225/35 is a good size, 205 is pretty small.
