Just wondering im turboing my nb8b next month also doing the major service timing belt etc
Do you reckon its better getting a gates racing timing belt or just the standard kit through mx5mania?

Re: Gates racing timing belt
The blue belt is stronger but really not necessary for a street car.

Re: Gates racing timing belt
I had my tuner tell me that he questioned a gates product rep on it.
Response was the only difference between them is one is blue and has racing written on it. Belts are otherwise identical.

Re: Gates racing timing belt
Im sure Gates would love one of their reps saying that!

Having observed what happens to a garden variety Dayco belt under race conditions, I will be using a Gates blue next year based on a recommendation from another racer.

I wondered about this also. Maybe the rep was referring to use on a streeter. Either way Zossy's link spells it out.

Re: Gates racing timing belt
Hmmm I don't think the link does spell it out.
It says the belt is 3x as strong as a standard aftermarket belt, which could be any brand not 3 times stronger then a gates belt.
I used one because I read all the stuff on the Internet as well. . The blue dosent hold up well and cracks / crazes but it's only the blue on the belt not the belt itself.

You're right. 3 times stronger than stock belt. I misread the word "stock".
Why would they not compare to black belt of their own? Unless of course this is just "clever" marketing and they know it is not 3 times stronger then their own black belt.
I'd still buy gates but would prefer if they would compare apples with apples.

Could be that standard gates are rejected batches that are not 300% stronger, but are at least stronger than stock. Would be a way to charge for the racing and make the claim as they have tested the Racing batches to be 3x stock belts, but the standard gates belt isn't tested and they know certain batches fail the 3x test, but pass the stock strength test.
MX5 91 NA6 LE completely stock and loving it!
