Re: Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast...
When things do go wrong having Total care can save significant cost and inconvenience but these things can still disrupt a trip or spoil it. I saw 2 examples first hand in the last month- significantly mitigated by insurance. One guy with a caravan - broken engine - 700 km from home. He was not happy with his 3 year old Nissan with only 29000 klms and probably not fixable until Xmas and no parts in Au= what a great advert for Nissan with apparently a Renault engine.
I recall driving to Mildura in the Christmas period and stepped out of the vehicle for a look at Pink Lakes into an inferno and flies that made being there unbearable. That part of the world is pretty awful in Summer and same for Outback NSW.

I've got the guy on ignore. I've haven't a clue what he's posted and I'm not interested.

So far I'm planning on getting to Broken Hill and visting the Mad Max Museum. Then I'm intending on a generally eastern direction for the Oxley Highway, with the intention of stopping at the Apsley Falls. This leg may be a two day jaunt... After that I'm still deciding on which route north. I've been advised by several work colleagues to avoid Brisbane, so am thinking of heading inland somewhat towards Goondiwindi and from there up the A5 to Rockhampton. But at this stage anything past Apsley Falls are just points on a map for me. I've given myself 7 days to 'explore' and three days to head home (from wherever I may be), though I can book more days off work if I need to.
I'm really looking forward to this!!!

Miles,
Take more drinking water than you will ever need and make the rest up.
Enjoy.
Greg.

The mountains around Brisbane have some of the best twisty driving roads you will find.

Go up through the Snowy Valley Way... being summer it'll be extremely nice driving for an MX5: Albury through Corryong and up to Cabramurra and Tumut is the way I've been. Out of my whole trip this was the best bit. One days worth from Albury up to Sydney or so, maybe Singleton/Newcastle... but I'd stay inland and not go Newcastle if going again. Don't go the Pacific Hwy any more than you have to.
I've done the southern part of the Snowy Valley already.

slug_dub wrote:If at Dorrigo don't go to Nana Glen, its dirt. Take the Armidale Road from Dorrigo to Grafton, very technical but had some potholes when I was there.
North of Grafton I'd say to not go via Warwick, there'll be more interesting roads to take ending up on the Gold Coast.
Is this the route you mean? https://goo.gl/maps/ZnXgf

The Lions Road is only a small link, rough in places with lots of caravans/campers at certain times between Kyogle and Rathdowney.
Kyogle-Uki-Tyalgum-Chillingham-Numinbah-Canungra is far more interesting IMO.
From Canungra you can go west of Brisbane city and pick up very interesting roads north.

Hmmm...

Combined with this drive https://goo.gl/maps/qeqIy it looks like Day Five is sorted.

Edit to say:
Actually, the above two drives combined are over 9 hours without breaks. I think I'll stop in Casino overnight for Day Five and do this: https://goo.gl/maps/DePMI as the first half of day six. It's only c.190km.

They're all good. An alternative worth considering from Grafton is to go to Lismore, then through Nimbin (cannabis capital), Uki etc. to pick up the above route.
Instead of going to Canungra, you could take in Tamborine Mountain, then down to Tamborine Village and west around Brissy for heaps of great road choices north.

These three sites are brilliant, if you intend doing Parliament House, go early in the day and avoid joining school groups on the tours.
