Question for the SP owners here

Postby 498 » Wed Dec 03, 2014 8:06 pm

Hi everyone,

The carbon fibre airbox on my SP has lost half its clips  I've heard they aren't great and it's a common issue.

Did you repair or replace? What did you find and how'd you go about it?

Yeah those little clips are a real sh*t. Mine are pretty good but I know others have bought different types of aftermarket toggle clips and either screwed or riveted them on.
You can't replace the air box as there just aren't any to replace with. The last one I heard of sold for around $1000 and you won't be buying that as a spare. I know I tried. Its not for sale.

Cheers mate...yeah I realise I won't be finding an OEM replacement and frankly, I'm sure there are better aftermarket options. That said, I'd prefer repair over replace because it's a 1 in 100 piece.

Aftermarket toggle clips though...that's an interesting prospect. I've got some Googling to do!

Yeah the clips aren't great, but the mounting of the airbox is to blame. The flex joint is a bit of a joke and the spring mount on the bottom half of the airbox is too rigid.

Has anybody come up with a fix?

My filter seals fine with only half the clips. I have contemplated fitting better clips, but it's a low priority when it all works...

I may have found a suitable replacement clip in stainless.

I'll do some measurements and report back.

Hi Fellow SP Owners,

After much searching I found a source for the original clips/latches:

RGA Fastners (in Sydney) (Phone: 02 9560 7266)

Part No: 97-30-160-12 Southcorp Small Over Centre Latch S/S

They are $8.50 each and delivery is $8.00.

Regards,

Simon

The clips do leave a bit to be desired (more over center would be great) im lucky I have not lost one (she only did 5, 000 kays and that was a trip from Mackay for the year) I cleaned the area around the clip and placed a piece of 100 mph tape over the top, it the same principle as 1/4 turn fasteners on many motor bikes, yes the 0.10 grams for weight could become a problem................................ :D

THanks I need a new one
I also found that using shrink rubber on them ( the stuff you fire your blow torch at) made them stick much better probably by giving them a bit of flex.

I'm glad someone else had some luck...the ones I'd found were just fractionally out of whack...just enough that I wasn't satisfied with them.

I emailed RGA and their minimum order is 10 pieces. Anyone interested in joining me for a group buy?
