CM sport #2 Tarmac rally car

Postby CM sport » Wed Dec 03, 2014 5:13 pm

Ok so it seems whilst the other car is still being built there was a great local series pop up in Sydney that was far too hard to miss out on. So after a few beers I had an amazing idea ....
I have a spare na8 shell with a cage and a garage full of parts why not put a spare chassis together to do some racing with.

So at the start of November I sent in my entry form for rd two of the twilight Tarmac series at Sydney dragway. With a shell sitting out side and just under 3 weeks to get it ready it was all hands on deck (pretty much just me lol).

So this is what I had sitting in the driveway ready to go up on stands and be pressure washed and blown out of all the cobwebs and dust that had collected inside.

Week one : I cleaned the car , repaired the cage , painted the cage , fitted viscous lsd na8 diff and axles.
This was going to be tight.

Week 2 : after much scrounging around the garage for parts I managed to get pretty well all my parts together. The spare na6 engine was fitted along with a car make corns jdm exhaust. Majority of the wiring was run with only a few small modifications to mate the na6 harness to the na8 harness.

Which pushed us into week three . I only had 4 days to get ready as the Scrutineer was coming to inspect the car that week so the scramble started. In the last days I got the extinguishers mounted , co driver seat in , bled the brakes and clutch in an effort to see if they worked (had no idea at all). The budget was tight so new brakes weren't on the cards just yet. Also put the carbon fiber hard top from my brown car onto this one so we didn't get too sunburnt with 40+ degrees predicted for race day.

The Scrutineer showed up right as we were finishing the last little jobs so what a relief when the car was passed and ready to race.

I'll post up the rest of how we went later tonight.
Thanks for reading guys.

Thanks guys and yes I believe the colour is sparkle green going off the paint code on the build plate.

Ok so before we headed off to the track . I stopped in at Blair's for a wheel alignment with my specs in hand. Still not 100% happy with the alignment as it feels as if the rear has too much camber for my liking but either way we will just have to play with it a little and see what we can sort out.

What a great night out racing although I did put the car into some barriers. No major damage at all just some minor panel work to be repaired. Also after finding the rear end of the car to be very twitchy on the night. The car actually had na8 back brakes and na6 fronts. Making the car very hard to sort under brakes as the rear had too much power.

We did well for a car that hadn't turned a wheel at all until turn 1 of our first run. I was rather annoyed as somehow a few turbo cars that should have been in other classes were in mine also . Pushing us back up the order to 6th.
After us having a cracker night in the car that probably shouldn't have been there at all. We were invited to compete at the final round of the Australian Tarmac series final round in the snowy mountains. So once again with a weeks and a bit notice we had some work to do.
Will get the rest of how we are going up later today.

So two weeks ago what a big job again argh it never ends does it.
We spent a full weekend repairing accident damage from the twilight series . Not bad for a home job if I do say so myself.

Next up was a few small repairs after finding a few niggling issues with the car. Fitted a set of na6 calipers to the rear of the car with new slotted rotors all around too. The car also got a fresh timing kit cam seals as they were leaking slightly .

Also resealed these little oil plugs in the head just to be safe.

Currently we are loaded up and ready to leave tommorow for Vic to do some racing in the snowies. Excited would be an understatement [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

What a great weekend away. We are all unpacked after a huge success at the final round of the Australian Tarmac series in the Victorian snowies. Friday we headed down for scrutineering and sign on ready for an 8am start in buchan on Saturday morning. We have the car a quick fluids flush on Friday night and checked over all the little niggly things.
We had every type of condition from torrential rain to scorching hot Tarmac across the weekend and with our setup we weren't sure how that would all go. But alas the little mazda was hunting down some very experienced racers and made our way for the back up towards the front of our group by the end of the 300 odd klms in two days.

Even in the wet conditions we showed no sign of slowing on our toyo r888's. I must say the tires performed fantastically in all conditions. Just have a look how hard we were pushing in the wet.
Hopefully will upload some go pro footage over the next few days.
