1993 1.6 Engine Noise

Postby Daz » Sun Nov 30, 2014 8:45 am

My dad has a very nice 1993 Australian delivered NA6A with 70,000km on it and it has developed a noise that seems to be in the top of the motor. We are not sure if its a coincidence, but we recently changed the oil to 10W40 Magnatec and the noise came some time after that. I cant see why this would make a difference, but its the only thing that really correlates.

Anyhow, I took a video, just wondering if anyone recognises the noise as some kind of common issue with the 1.6 :

Before hearing the video it was shaping up to probably be HLA noise, but it doesn't exactly sound that way in the video. Might just be because the recording seems to be emphasing engine turnover, making the ball bearing being shaken in an empty glass jar noise sound like it's in the background. Whereas HLA noise is usually much more prominent at least when you're standing next to the running engine.

Sounds a bit irregular to be HLA.
Could be cam belt tensioner, water pump or other cam belt system noise.

It is a little intermittent but doesn't go away for long periods of time. The timing belt has already been changed by a Mazda dealer, I think the previous owner did all services on a time basis because they changed the belt way before 100k.

Obviously the fact a Mazda dealer has been in there also makes me suspicious something wasn't done right.... I am not in a hurry to take it another dealer for diagnosis but dad doesn't really want to drive it far while the noise is there....
