All have been done now except for the removal of tape from air con vents..I am looking into the removal process & want to avoid damaging the dash. any write ups here would be good.

Recently did this to swap over to flipper vents.

Cut some strips about 70x20mm from the plastic of a milk container. Slip 2 or 3 of them between the dash and outer vent ring. Slide them around and the vent will pop out. Once the first is out you'll see the clips that hold it in.

hmmm.. the method i was going to use is placing plastic cards at 9-3 o'clock & wriggle them around, also tie up string around the eye ball & pull a tad. i found some pics of how another member on here done the same thing. just want to know how far i should insert the cards & what im feeling for?

Is that HKB boss kit the one from MX5 Mania?

Thinking of getting one for mine if I end up getting another mx or something for a daily, dont really want to run the risk with the po-lice daily driving with a non oem airbag wheel.

That is very true, mx5's tend to slip under the radar unless you drive like a complete tool. Even since fitting my sparco seat and roll bar I dont get looked at anymore often.

I agree, my MX5 gets no police attention. Provided I drive it sensibly on the road it is as quite as a normal MX5, however put the foot down and change at 8,000 rpm is a different story!

the only shitty thing is the horn button ring i got with the sparco wheel didnt fit the boss kit properly so im currently not running one at the moment, the horn still works but the horn button itself is slightly loose & makes a bit of noise when turning sharply. going to have to chase up sparco now. but as predicted, steering feels much tighter/direct.. less input needed, slightly heavier (in a good way) & my knees don't get in the way. ive kept all OEM parts if ever i need them.

also picked up a voodoo round polished knob, feels good/weighted. i originally wanted a tear drop style knob similar to factory shape but couldn't find one that tickled my fancy.

also purchased a fire extinguisher to mount on the passenger seat mount area - just need to make a bracket. Gorgan's first trackday booked in for 26/8 @ WP .. looking forward to it. i just need to obtain a timing app on my phone - can anyone recommend a half decent app for the iphone utilising GPS?

so bit of an update.. hit my first wakie track day which in summary was awesome even though it was pissing down rain the whole time. it was a tad scary at times, i think i got too keen - i spun out 3 times mainly due to carrying too much speed i.e. pushing it. i was very suprised how well traction held up in the wet on the street tyres im running, i got a bit side ways on turn 9-10 & held the counter steer quite well.. though due to the short wheel base it can be really snappy coupled with the LSD being a single spinner i couldnt really play with throttle.

i didn't bother filming or timing myself as it was crazy weather, at the end of the day though i had clean lines & a couple of 86's hesitating to keep up with me, but my braking points need some improvement. i will be downloading harry's track timer pro to time/evaluate performance in future, i aim to attend 6+ track days per year.

as for the car, ive got some items lined up to be installed hopefully in the next month or so, one thing is i have a bit of mixed thoughts around some of the modifications i originally wanted to do, this car will now most likely be my daily driver for a while..simply because i dont want to buy another car.. pay 2 sets of rego's etc.. trying to focus on saving & improving my financial position. so perhaps the mods will be mild for now.

anywho, hopefully will have some changes to the car next time i check in.

so ive been a lazy bastadge since the last post.. also went O/S so haven't had too much time to tinker with Gorg's.. however, here's what i have managed to do since the last time i checked in:

purchased an NB hard top with demister + new fitting kit.. this is how it arrived, credit to automotive plus for their thorough packing, i now have a sh!t load of bubble wrap.


this is at the panel beaters as we speak for some minor scratch repairs + paint. the soft top will be removed & sold.

i purchased a racing beat intake + carbon fibre cover a little while ago, but a short time after i changed my mind around changing the stock intake system i.e. i will leave it the way it is. so now i have a credit to spend from the supplier who is a forum sponsor. i will prob look at changing my brake pads to carbotech's.. & perhaps machine my disks if possible.

i also successfully removed 1x air vent with the rest to soon follow.. i used the method as seen here:

it was very easy & left no marks or damage. im currently waiting for 4x new vents from mania.. which are on back order from mazda! will try to squeeze in another WP track day by end of year.

i went to the WTAC this weekend & it's got me pumped to mod the car again the way i originally wanted..

bit of an update.. finally. visited mike/dan @ deckspeed racing for the first time, it was a short time speaking to dan before i realised this man knows his stuff/mx5's.

here is what happened:

- removed soft top
- installed side latches for hardtop & installed hard top
- machined discs
- new brake pads - carbotech xp10's
- braided lines - mazda speed/BF goodrich
- brake fluid
- clutch fluid







so on the way home on the m5 i bedded in the pads & .. daaaamn they work really well, i never thought i would smile so much from stopping hard, i know it sounds silly but they definately were a good investment & will allow for very late braking - they really have changed the car dramatically. the feel of the pedal has changed aswell - i believe due to the braided lines, its much more sensative.. in a good way. the only thing now is that i feel the whole weight shift when braking hard on the stock suspension, it really unsettles the car.. so new suspension is definately on the cards. my gearbox/gear changes were pretty tight for some time & kept crunching between 1-4th so dan checked it out, made some adjustments & when i drove out it was much better!

i was very glad that i didnt attempt to take the soft top off myself, so many bolts/screws that came out - i could only imagine how long it would of taken + the number of plastic OEM clips i would have broken. i wont need the soft top anymore so will look at selling this. car looks much better with hardtop on & is quieter in cabin which is a bonus. the car is filthy at the moment so no pics.. cant wait for a good wash & polish next week. All i need to do now is tint the rear window in line with my current shade.

lastly i have ended up purchasing a run around car, which means the mx is now officially a weekender.. aim is to prep it as much as i can so next year i can get stuck into some track days.

So.. i ended up purchasing a run around car last week for comfortable daily duties, its a practically new mitsi mirage.. in a nice girly red colour! it's ideal & very economical + price was right & Gorgs can now enjoy the garage at a full time basis. the previous owner was the mother of loaded dude who was kind enough to renew the rego for me (im quite the negotiator). he also happened to have an orange lambo gallardo in his garage.... bastard.



finally, the new air vents arrived from mania, so on the weekend i replaced them. I also fixed that loose horn button issue, so its fitted the way it should!



so from my original list of clean up items, all is now done & the car is looking fairly clean both interior + exterior wise. i wonder if it will remain that way once i start tracking it at a regular basis?!

the soft top i had sold pretty quick, the proceeds will be reinvested into the Gorg's modifying fund (GMF), looking at a sparco V & roll bar. in other news i have purchased a new set of rims which should arrive hopefully for Christmas.. i am still confused as to which coilovers to get, its not something i want to get wrong so im taking my time with that. i dont think i will get another track day in pre Christmas - just been busy.

Finally got around to washing & polishing the car..polishing took way too long, im considering investing in a polishing machine, went out for a quick thrash.. it really needs some new suspension!

the hardtop really changes the look of the car in a positive way, although i didnt mind the soft top.. i much prefer the hard top. its very nicely colour matched, work was done at TM smash in wetherill park, highly recommended.

As for suspension go MCA since you want to hit the track often. Go reds if you can afford the 2.8k price tag or the blues would be plenty enough!
