NT-01 vs AD08R

Hi all,

Sorting everything our for next year's competition season and am questioning which Tyre to run.

The car will be dríven to the track and most likely dríven on the tyres being used.

I have loved the AD08R tyres but am wondering if I would see an improvement going to the NT-01 for the same sort of $$.

I will be running 15x8 with a 205.

There will be a 200k drive each way from Sydney to Goulburn and I am concerned the Nitto will not take that as well as the YOKO but then I also do not want to be giving time away.

Any help much appreciated.

I would say the nitto's, but they are noisy as and once they are half worn not road legal. Which is when they are at their best.

Get both! Nittos should be 1-1.5 secs quicker at Wakefield but they'll be shyte on the road: noise, wear, damage, aquaplaning, constabulary, etc. You'd need to park up if it rains much.

I always drive there with street tyres on and carry a set of r-specs in the cabin and boot. It means I'm safe and legal in transit plus I have a decent set of rain tyres with me for the track if the need arises. 195/50R15 street tyres would be fine on any cheap set of 15x6.5 rims. Generally AD08R or Star Specs wear much better than R-specs on the road while R-specs last much longer on the track.

NT-01 will be quicker but I would never run it on the road. AD08 is the best all rounder tyre around.

I have had some serious aquaplaning with NT-01's while traveling barely 100km/h down the main straight of Phillip Island.

Yeah, tyres are different level.
I ran ad08r's on the weekend at lakeside and they were pretty good. They seem a bit quicker than the rs3's I was running, but could just be because they're new.

Really appreciating the responses.
Beavis I know you have experience with the Nittos.
Have you used the AD08R?
Could you say roughly how much quicker the NT01 would be?
On say a Wakefield style track?
The car currently does 12s with Ad08R.

I drive on mine to smsp for events but drive on street tyres to Wakefield.

They're pretty much just a track tyre. Would be pretty loose on the road when they're cold ( normal driving)

I've not used the AD08 on my race car.
But they are an exceptional tyre and I have no doubt you should buy them given you will be street driving.
In terms of times, it would be around 1sec difference.
I did a 1:10 at wakefield on a hot dusty day with NT01's in the white car a year ago.

Yeah that is kind of what I had planned but if I am possibly giving up a second or so with the the AD08rs then I would reconsider.

I guess my question is really is the NT-01 considerably faster then the Ad08r or are we talking a tenth or 2?

Consider that Clubsprint class at WTAC run the AD08, and still pump out amazing times.
The difference is more than tenths..... just :P

I would suggest it is more towards considerably rather than just tenths.

I have both ad08rs and nt01s. I ran them back to back at a wet phillip island meeting earlier in the year. The Ad08s were awesome in the wet (and not surprisingly 100x better than the nt01s in the same conditions) however when the track dried up a bit the ad08s were a fair bit squirmier than used to with the Nittos. I swapped the Nittos back on and next session was several seconds faster. Some of this was slightly drier track however most was from the extra grip and confidence that this provides.

So it sounds like if I want to maximize potential the NT-01 is the winner.

I was curious as I have seen the awesome times the club sprint WTAC guys get with Ad08r and also my own experience with them.
Then I have seen how cheap the nittos are and being a R spec I thought maybe they may or may not have a real edge over the Yoko.

I might be able to borrow my brothers set of wheels with AD08R to use at the Dec club day and then I can do my own comparison next year running on Nt-01.

Hopefully my 6ULs will arrive soon.
Been waiting for 4 months. :(

slightly off topic but how does everyone run in their r specs before 1st track use?

I just got some nt01s and took them for a run through Ku-ring-gai last night, while being impressed with the grip compared to my old ku36 I felt I couldn't get enough heat into them so they have been properly heat cycled prior to their first track outing.

does it even matter?

PS and if it helps dweezle st george tyres were $165 fitted for 205 (late 2013 stamped)
