I've ordered a standard 3" straight through muffler. I'll Keep the aluminium pipe from the headers to the back of the diff. The all aluminium exhaust had an excellent tone even if was a little loud with that tiny muffler. I had lots of comments on the track how good my car sounded when reving.

Looking in the muffler with a torch I can see a whole stack of the perforations missing. Might explain why the glass packing blew out!

Am guessing too much heat rather than flow blew out the perforations.
I'm impressed that you are going against the norm for something better.
Any photos of your headers or did I miss that?

Well my new muffler is a reflective style one. So it has multiple 'v' shapes inside the muffler to reflect and cancel sound. I believe the rotary guys use them and I figured given I have a car that sounds a bit like a rotary it might work for me. Another experiment!

The only issue it it's heavy... if it works, maybe I could make an aluminium version!

The car does throw some flames out the back... so maybe your right and the heat melted the perforations.

I'll PM you some photos.

Rotors put out a lot of heat and force. Glass packing wouldn't last a day in my rx7 on the track.
I used SS packing and its fine.
That's the reason I suggested it.
Maybe if the alloy perforation tube had a thicker wall (like the rest of your system) it may survive but considering your blowing flames then I probably wouldn't waste time trying.

How bout a combination of alloy for muffler body and SS for perforation tube?

Curious to hear how you get on with the new muffler.

Now I better check out those photos :)
