Catflaps need Kilowatts

Was speaking to Rob the Mighty Mouse owner at WTAC.

When he went uber radical cat flaps he lost 25 kph down straight of SMP but went 5 seconds a lap quicker,
that car runs 260 fwkw naturally aspirated.

My Honda Powered NB was managing 245 on main straight at Phillip Island but with no Aero sure
was sketchy coming onto the straight that probably cost me 10 k.

I guess theres a balance needed between catflaps and kilowatts.

get that turbz on there I guess or maybe try a supercharger for something different.

thats 1 second faster than the v8 utes lap record.

time to add turbo?

245 on the main straight is impressive. What lap times did it do?
My WRX only did 235 with 175awkw.
The red NB8A did 206 with a tailwind. Rev limit in 6th with 4.3 diff and 6 speed.

It was the Regularity Event

1:50.1 was all I managed, we weren't allowed to break out and go under 1:50.0, we had
three Honda Powered cars and embarassingly I was only one not to break out.

With me in it car was full weight about 1200 kg

An easy 2-3 seconds in being able to drive PI even halfway decent.

Was pulling about 7600 RPM in 6th Gear with a 4.1 diff was going well off the clock
but the speedo read about 15-20 k's over so 245 is the estimate.

Will be going back in 2015 hoping to sneak under 1:45 seconds in the NA chassis.

I've always loved the idea of a K series motor in the MX, but the cost is a lot higher than a basic turbo setup.
I envy your motor.

Turbo/Super chargers are probably going to happen somewhere soon.
I assume a Supercharger isn't going to be as effective as turbo, given the car spends most of it's life above 5000rpm. Unless someone smart can give me some insight into it?

rotrex style does not run out of puff like a positive displacement supercharger does.

its efficient, but probably not as efficient as a turbo.

and they cost a lot of money.

simple turbo setup is going to be much cheaper and there is so much track testing out there on mx5's with turbos it should be relatively easy to make a very reliable setup that is scalable as and when you want more power.

or you could be a man and do both.

Over the Melbourne Cup weekend I stripped down the silver NB I had lying around (it had some accident damage) and threw all the good bits into a white NA shell.
All in all, most of it was done in about 2-3 days of work....

Interior going in, loom is done, carpet is done, heater/ac/blower boxes in.

And, job done, bent shell is off to a new home where it'll be melted down and turned into a new 2016 MX-5.

So for anyone that ever decides to do this, note, the NB Fuel tank does not fit in an NA. The solution is to cut out the rear boot/parcel area and weld in the one from an NB.

The NA8 fuel tank fits a NA6, advantage is about 5 ltrs. Not sure the advantage of the NB tank.

Biggest advantage was we had an NB8B fuel tank, but no NA tank. Trying to source an NA tank over a long weekend would take longer than cutting and welding.
