Advice In buying 2nd hand MX 5

Postby simie2014 » Tue Nov 11, 2014 9:58 am

Hi guys. I have the opportunity to purchase a 2000 nb series 1 with 179000km on body. Motor has been replaced with a jap import with 30 000 km due to a coolent leak leading to failure. Body is straight, no rust good top. Rego till January 2015. Owner wants $5k for it. Seems like a good buy. Any opinions? Also, would appreciate a list of things to look forie faults with this model that I should be aware of. Thanks I advance. Simie

Drive a few, even a shitty one will feel better than other cars and tell us where you are, someone might be prepared to have a look with you.

$5000 is pretty cheap but personally I'd dig a bit deeper and try and get the series 2 NB8B.

Would love to get the series 2...different dash and quite a few imptovements I know but it would be at least another $3-4k at least. Ive been looking for some time for MX5 and havent seen an nb series 1 for under 7k so I think this one is a pretty good buy. Only a two owner. Paint is dull but has been well looked after. Female owner who has kept every reciept and under cover and owner for 5 years. For the money I think it's a bit of a bargain. Goes to the mechanic today for an pre purchase inspection

Hey Simie

Will it be your daily driver or the 'second car'? For $5k I'd expect to repair a few things along the way with ownership, be prepared..

By the way, what Jap Import engine is it? SR20DET?

Mx5 Won't be a daily drive have an ultra reliable Corolla for that. Not sure of number designation of replacement engine but it came out of a Jap MX5. It is registered with new engine which is good. As mentioned car is getting checked out as we speak. I suspect it needs new shocks but everything else appears sound. Whole car needs a polish and a bit of tlc.
