i want to see for myself if all the hype about lighter wheels makes much difference for daily type driving.

You would also need to consider tyres in this comparison as these would make a difference as well.
I know it makes things more difficult but for a fair test the tyres would need to be a similar 'type' to what you have on your 17" rims.....

pezchops I have a few sets of 15" wheels you could try:
6UL's with FZ201's
Avanti Storm II with 595RSR's
Light rims with DZ03's
Rims with street tyres

I'm curious about the differences too. I don't think there would be time for me to try it out, but I'm interested to see what your impressions are Pete.

You're actually in a really good position for this Lachy given you're about to replace the suspension with new coilovers (what did you end up getting by the way?).

Get there early, compare 17" with 15" on standard suspension.
Replace suspension.
Compare 17" with 15" again (yes I know the new suspension won't have settled or been dailed in yet).

Depending on how good your memory/bias is it would be a great comparison to give an indication of what's more effective, suspension or wheels or both!

I got the HSDs :)

We'll see what we can do, I don't want to monopolize time and resources, but your right, it would give a pretty awesome comparison.

Im thinking even if 15s are better ,to have a short trial will just tell me there is a difference .
without getting used to it for an extended period i will still prefer the 17s because that's all Ive dríven on.

I think it would depend on what you consider "better" is.... for some, the more direct and firm feel will seem "better". No doubt the high profile tyre has more squish and wall flex and this could be considered soft and less direct. The reason it is stated as better on the track is that it allows for more tyre to come into contact with the road - the rolling over of the contact patch is what gives you grip. Taken to extremes, 22" wheels would have such small profile tyres that when you lean over on a corner, the wheel angle would change and the tyre patch would be only 10% of what it would be when straight - and the grip would be rubbish.

Technically speaking, 15" wheels are better for the handling of the MX5 suspension - but I wouldn't be sure that everyone would "feel" that as an improvement and I wouldn't be surprised if you felt it wasn't better or potentially felt like it was even worse!

Good choice!

It shouldn't take too long to swap over for the test, I mean you've got to take the wheels off to install the coilovers anyway.......

Only just stumbled across this, would definitely been up for a drive down and a chat. Only have the tps and 02 sensor to do but I'm hoping to get onto that in the next few weekends

In case there was any doubt, I'm in! I have my coilovers and intercooler ready to rumble. Just need to make a trip to bunnings for a strip of aluminium for the brackets.

Might put the foamectomy on hold, I'm undecided on it  I have the cable ties, and I'll bring them along on the day.

What time are the gates open Magpie? Might be a good idea to sound off again on jobs and food/drink supplies.

it would be interesting to see an attendance list..you may need a back up BBQ.
who is going along?
Murphy's Law:If anything can go wrong,it will.
Shakespeares Law:Never use a big word if a diminutive one will do.
Cole's Law:Slice a cabbage.
